I'm thinking hard Dodger or Hard Bimini. Maybe bolt to a stainless steel frame. Also anyone use Starboard for a hatchboard?? Wood isn't my material of choice. A fiberglass over foam mold might work.

A hard doger with starboard
would have to use very thick starboard because it doesn't handle well in shear, it cracks. Fiberglass would be better because you might need to stand on it. Also, starboard doesn't bend well, and flat sections tend to look kinda cluncky if used as, say, a bimini.

Hi Tom, anything that you can build with wood...
If it were my boat I would use lexan or some other clear material to see through and let light in rather than starboard, but it will work for a hatchboard. I would not use it for a bimini or dodger. Large panels tend to sag over time unless reinforced some way. Stick with marine canvas for the bimini. Most hard dodgers that I've seen around these parts are made of FRP. Terry

Just another thought, but I don't like hard dodgers or biminis. When the weather is decent, I like both of mine down. I want some breeze in my face and some sun on my back. I only use my dodger when the weather turns snotty, and I want to keep excess wind and spray off. Bimini I use more, but still like it folded lots of the time when it isn't too hot.

Consider Cleaning
I made a 4 cup drink & binocular holder out of Starboard. A big drawback is keeping it clean. I am always scrubbing and applying a dilluted solution of bleach to keep it clean. Seems to have some surface porosity I cannot imagine continually cleaning a hard dodger made of Starboard

Starboard trivia
2 pieces of Starboard trivia I picked up over time are, firstly, that it has a fairly low melting point--200 degrees f., so you won't want to put the barbecue under that hard dodger. Secondly, the instructions that come with it tell you to avoid marking it with pencil because the marks are hard to get off, so abrasions will mark it up over time. A number of newer boats including Catalina have some kind of starboard-like material for hatch boards, so it should be possible to use it for that application. the 3/4 inch thickness you might typically use for hatch boards will be heavier than the equivalent in wood. UV resistance might not be great, so it's a better material for below-decks than above.

For the step that is at the transom under the helm seat, that has alot of traffic and holds up really well, it is also easy to clean with some roll off, soft scrub and a nail brush.

The largest panel from WM, special order, was two by four feet as I recall and available in either 1/2 or 3/4 inch thickness. It came in two different colors; bright white and a skim milk color. At the time I checked Home Depot or Lowes did not carry the stuff. I do not use screws because the material does not hold them as well as wood. I always use SS flat head bolts with recessed washers and locking nuts. Terry

Another material
For small projects, such as cup holders etc. where you do not need material in large pieces, or heavy thickness, just run down to the Dollar store and get you a plastic cutting board. The material is pretty similar to starboard, but you can only get the small sizes. It is a little bit soft, but nothing sticks to it, and clean up is very easy.
