Very cool Dye - Where do they do that!?

And do they board EVERY boat? But thats really only going to work for the people that don't have a Y valve set correctly. For instance an my boat I have a macerator going out. So the dye wouldn't go out on a flush....but at 2am I could open the thru-hull and turn on the macerator.....and away she goes.....not that I would do that in an enclosed harbour though.

Tahoe is "no discharge," all right, but...

"no discharge" laws ONLY apply to "human body waste and the waste from toilets"...they do not apply to gray water. However, if there are any permanently moored floating structures on Tahoe, they may very well be prohibited from discharging ANYthing into the lake. And rental houseboats, of which there are a zillion on Tahoe, and which fall under the regs for inspected vessels (CFR 33 159.16), may be required to hold gray water as well as black water. But insofar as as privately owned boats are concerned, gray water holding is not required anywhere in the country--including Tahoe--except on the two aforementioned lakes.

Peggy: There are NO houseboats on Lake Tahoe. They are prohibited! There is no discharge of gray water on Tahoe either (it is considered WASTE WATER by the TRPA). They do not allow non 2006 certified 2 stroke engines in the lake. This is per Larry Benoit who is the water quality person for the TRPA (Tahoe Regional Planning Agency). Lake Tahoe is considered the MOST pristine lake in the US that even allows boats with motors. No gasoline allowed with MTBE. They only allow you to look at it but you cannot touch<g>! It has always been this way as far as I know. When I was looking for a sailboat back in the 70's, the boats had plastic bottle under the sinks to drain the gray water into. The Federal Government starting with Pres. Clinton and now Pres. Bush have earmarked several hundred million dollars to clean up and preserve the lake from all types of pollution. This includes rain and snow melt, even local stream run off. They cannot dig for construction projects between Oct. and May of the year because of the extra dirt (sediment) that may get into the water. Anyway you can add this to your list of ZERO - ZERO discharge of anything lakes.

Take a trip...

A trip to a boat show where you can see a multitude of boats in different lengths by different manufacturers is key before such a big purchase. Differences in design, quality and comfort among boats of similar size and price will be quite obvious as you walk from one to the next in quick succession. It became clear to me which production boat was right for us (no names to avoid bias or insult). I found the model I wanted and then scoured yachtworld.com for three months until I found the right boat---4 years old with minimal hours and from a lake to boot. I had to truck it to Miami, but the money I saved by taking my time more than covered the cost of transportation and the (few) necessary repairs. Also, forget price. Don't buy more of a boat than you will need or use. Complexity greatly compounds maintenance and increases the likelyhood of system failures. Good Luck.
