I thought it might be helpful and informative if the active members of this forum revealed the home waters they sail. 1. Where do you sail routinely? 2. Favorite sailing vacation? 3. Any near future adventures on the drawing board? 1. I sail Brookville Lake in southeast Indiana, near Cincinnati. 2. We trailer to Kentucky Lake every year and have a great time. 3. Jack's invite to Charlotte Harbor is very attractive! But I will trailer to Palmetto, Fl, next fall where I have family. They live on Terra Ceia bay that is adjacent to Tampa bay.

Narragansett Bay...

1. Usually sail Narragansett Bay, RI 2. Love to sail in Maine waters. But really prefer BVI because of its uniqueness. 3. Moving boat permanently to Maine next season. We have seen what we have wanted to around here. Now for new endeavors. Have sailed RI Sound (Block Island), Long Island Sound (Long Island and Peconic Bays), Vineyard Sound (Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket).

We sail Lake Michigan

We sail southern Lake Michigan out of Michigan City Indiana we live in Indianapolis. We used to have a trailerable but now have a Hunter 31 that stays in Lake Michigan. The BVI's has been the best sailing vacation but the coast of Michigan has been a great place to sail in the summer.

Want to try Michigan

Keith, I live in Indy too. Always wanted to try Lake Michigan. What is the best marina to sail from? Soling, I would love to do a extended trip to Sanibel and back. I will look you up.

Through the slot?

I'd guess you slip through the narrow passage at the tip of Boca rather than going all the way out and around? I had the crap scared out of me a few years ago when I was returning to Charlotte harbor due to small craft warning conditions. Just as I approached, the GPS lost signal. I'm hoping to trail my H26 down this February. I have hopes of finding others that will be in the area to buddy sail for a couple of weeks for moral support. I'll most likely be single handing.

Lake Pubelo, Colorado

1. We sail out of Lake Pueblo State Park in Colorado. There is a decent size (small compared to others) just south of Colorado Springs. I have a 1hr, 5 min drive to the boat. We keep her slipped from April - Oct and dry storage over the winter. 2. Without a doubt - 10 Day Bareboat cruise around the BVIs. That was the pivotal trip that thrust me into boat ownership. :) 3. We would like to do another bareboat cruise again. It has been far too long. Long term goals include a move to a more costal area, and local cruises around in the ocean preparing for the dream. Selling everything and buying a cruiser for our retirement years.

My boat is located

in Deale, Md, about 20 miles south of Annapolis, on the Chesapeake Bay. I typically sail in an area bounded by about 25 miles north and 25 miles south of my marina, which puts in range of all the great ports and gunkholes on the West, South, Severn, and Magothy Rivers to the north, and Rock Hall once in a while. It also puts me in easy range of St Michaels, Knapps Narrows, Oxford, and Cambridge. I can get to Solomons Isl. with a good breeze and now and then get to the Pax River and on to the Potomac if I have the time. 'Tis a great place to sail.

Lake Champlain/LI Sound

Living in mid-VT on the NH border, we find the *closest*, best sailing is a 4000+ acre spot called Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire, but we didn't get there with Grasshopper this season. On our previous (and first) sailboat, Shortstay III, an 18.5' drop keel sloop, we sailed there several times, so Sunapee has a place of nostalgia in our hearts as well. However, as we've become more experienced trailer sailors, we've looked to go further a field. This season, our first with Grasshopper, all our sailing was either on Lake Champlain or LI Sound. We had the opportunity to slip on Champlain for 16 days, gratis, and jumped at the chance; we learned enough to realize we would like to sail there more often. We also left Grasshopper on LI Sound for 9 days. The second weekend was necessitated by the trailer bearings disintegrating, luckily after launching! We have the connections to moor there again (friends keeping an eye on her while we're away) and probably will -- hopefully NOT due to trailer failure! Champlain is closer, but the Sound is our "home waters," as my wife & I grew up on the CT shore. Next season, we will probably dry-moor (i.e. leave Grasshopper rigged on her trailer) on Champlain for a month (probably August) but also take her down to Milford, CT while my mom's slot at the family beach cottage comes up in early July. Eventually, we may dry-moor in CT, but it's so much more expensive down country & Champlain has so much to offer. Slipping or having a regular mooring is possible, but I like the convenience of having her ready to go fairly easily/quickly while saving $$$ on dockage. Also, there are many places we want to sail/see (see below), so I don't want to be tied to one sailing ground for an entire season. As for favorite cruising vacations, in '06 we sailed from Milford to Mystic Seaport & docked for 2 nights at the Seaport. The return adventure was cut short by the remnants of Ernesto blowing in. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful time & we'd like to do so again. We might link it to my son & daughter attending a weeklong sailing camp there. A definite drawing board cruise I have in mind, hopefully for next season, is to sail from CT to the World's Fair Marina in Flushing Meadow, NY, right next to Shea Stadium, home of our beloved Mets. When we were shopping for a 23.5, we looked at one there & I immediately started thinking of sailing there in the context of also attending a game. Exactly where we'd start is unclear, but perhaps it would be from Milford next July. However, that would present a distance of 55 NM each way, which would mean multiple days in each direction (not a problem to me, but the Admiral...). Thus, launching further west, such as Norwalk or Stamford, may be in the ultimate plan. Planning the passage in to & out of the East River/Flushing Bay will involve special attention to tidal currents. We would like to sail Boston Harbor in the near future too so good friends could join us for a day sail. I also have a client to whom I teach skiing who is the Chappaquiddick ferry operator. He has encouraged me to sail to the Vineyard & would help obtain accommodations. (Unfortunately, he's looking to sell!) Being in more open water would be a bit of a step-up for testing our seamanship skills, but a challenge I'd like to take on soon. Another vague plan is the Maine coast, which is where Grasshopper sailed until she came to us. Narragansett Bay/Newport, RI is also inviting. Block Island is a definite "to do.” So, basically, we'd like to explore the New England coast the next several seasons, especially before the kids get too old to want to be with the "old folks." ~ Kevin s/v Grasshopper Brownsville, VT

Both Coasts of Florida..

Living in Central Florida, I'm equal distance to both coasts. My favorite sailing destination is Caladesi Island.. Nice mixture of things to do in Dunedin, and open beaches on the island... Upcoming cruise in Charlotte Harbor has about 10 boats looking to join us on this merry romp down and back.. You're all welcome to join us on November 9th at the downtown Punta Gorda ramps.

St Marys, GA soon to be Beaufort, SC

I've sailed out of St Marys, Ga for the past 20 years. It's a great place for daysailing and short overnight trips to Fernandina Beach (FL) and Cumberland Island (GA). My favotrite sailing (group) destination would be the B.E.E.R. Cruise in June Pensacola, Fl. 2 other favorite sailing destinations are the Florida Keys and the Chesapeake Bay. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sail all 3 in he same year, but I'm trying. The closest 'Future adventure' is the Columbus Day Regatta in Miami. I'm going to try racing the H23.5. The REAL future adventure is relocating to Beaufort SC. That'll be a whole new sailing ground that looks AWESOME. I start my new job 10-28.

We sail out of Tampa Bay

with our sailing grounds being the eastern Gulf, the Florida Keys, Miami and the Bahamas. We also have a trailerable 223 Starwind and the sailing grounds are Long Island Sound, Cheaspeake Bay, Outer Banks NC and the Great Lakes. Needless to say we have more fun on the trailerable than in the 32'.

Bay Springs Lake

I sail Bay Springs Lake, a beautiful lake in northeast Mississippi on the Tenn-Tom Waterway. Planning a five day sail for early October on Pickwick lake located where Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi meet. Thirty miles up the ditch opens into vast sailing area.

The Hudson River; Kingston, NY area. They if you can sail here you can sail anywhere because of th erractic wind direction and speed, river cuurents, tidal currents, and depth changes. Woo hoooo!!!!!!!!!

Central Lake Michigan

We live in Grand Rapids and sail out of Muskegon which is about 35 miles from our house. We keep our boat at Habour Town Marnia which is an excellent facility. It is located right next to the channel to Lake Michigan. This is a great location because not only do we have Lake Michigan but also Muskegon Lake. It is interesting that if sailing isn't good on Lake Michigan, it will be very good on Muskegon Lake and the other way around. Our best vacation was a cruise on an historic sailboat out of Camden Maine. We spent 8 days cruising all the bay islands. We had 31 passengers and a crew of seven. Needless to say we were very pampered.

Stockholm, Sweden

The Swedish archipelago with its 25000+ islands. There you could always find a place to stay overnight by yourself - especially with the H26 in shallow waters. Or if you have small children, you can find a good harbour where they make friends with other children in 2 minutes, trying to catch the tiny fish close to the rocks. With the GPS I find my way very good in the waters (there are also many rocks just below the waterline). So if you come this way, don't miss the "Skärgården" (and if that's not enough you can reach the Finnish equivalent just after one days sailing) toomas
