I have a 1980 O'Day 25 c/b. I found a mysterious pair of lines stored under the cockpit. Perhaps if I describe them someone could tell me what they are for. They have about 8ft of light stainless cable with D shackles on one end. The other end has about 6ft of about 3/8" rope spliced on it. Could these be part of the mast raising system? If so, how and where are they used? sPk

How it works on my 23
With the mast laying out over the bow and the front pin on the step plate in place the boom is installed. The topping lift is attached, as are the upper shrouds and the mainsheet. The lines you found are attached with the D shackles attached to the triangular plates on the shrouds. the rope ends are tied to the clew (aft) end of the boom. Thus the boom is held in place at right angles to the mast - i.e. mast laying down and boom pointing skyward. Then, by pulling in on the mainsheet the mast rises. Make sure the forestay is attached. I know this is the way the PO of "Heron" was able to raise the mast alone. On a 23 it's easier to just lift the mast by hand, especially if there are two pairs of hands available. I first thought that they were spare c/b penants but there are two of them and someone added a brass swivel quick clip to each shackle end.

Read the response carefully.The boom is kept from flopping over by the wires you found .You have a triangular plate on each side of the boat do you not? This plate is about a foot from the bottom on the upper shroud.
