what are the most important traits/needs/what-have-yous for crew members/sailpartners ?
i am talking for a long passage and/or cruise....
what do you folks look for??

i look for loyalty and trustworthiness, communication--must be able to talk about anything and everything--
this person is the only other human soul on the boat with you on a loong trip in a sailboat--must be able to know that one will watch your back in case of need.

How about physical ability? I'd like a mate that can move faster than I and with a knack to foresee into the future, and a willingness to go out on a limb( and come back) along with everything else you say. Someone with a brain who's not afraid to use it. A keen understanding of physics

Keep it up,

Someone who recognizes the importance of morning coffee, and an evening sundowner, knows the difference between a sheet and a halyard, And looks good in a bikini...

Wonderwoman. Love that lasso. And she would look good in just a bikini bottom

Re: what are the most important things needed for a good cre

what i like best in a crew member/sailing partner is veracity--HONESTY is key.if a man (or woman) is UNABLE to speak truth, how can it be that the boat and individuals on board hold safety and trust in their mind-- is so difficult to trust someone else with life, limb and property if there is a lack of TRUTH in the communication.... what say ye???

You didn't mention gender. Pretty important factor. Hard to say what makes a good crew. My dear departed wife was an RN for 40 years. That makes you tops in my book. Suggest you take your volunteer on a two/three day voyage. This would give you a chance to size them up. I'd be all over this but I have other commitments. Aw, the hell with commitments, sign me up!:D 40 years of sailing experience and clean living. Well sailing experience anyway. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

Truth and honesty are the most valuable trait any individual can possess.
Man has but one thing to give and that is his word.
