Have you tried the Yahoo group Irwin forum yet. Go to Yahoo.com on left side of page, hit "GROUPS" The next page to pop up will have "Find a Yahoo Group". Type in "irwin sailboats" That will give you a link to irwinsailboatskippers. Once you get there, just use your yahoo ID and password, if you have o Nothing like talking to other Irwin owners. the farther aft you can locate the 'working end' of a running backstay the better: less load needed on the runner, less strain on the mast ........... all by the magic of trigonometry. I didnt state not to use runners going downwind. Use your runners when you 'have to' ... primarily to to keep the mast straight and not pumping. OR like me, I use them instead of a backstay adjuster when going upwind (or to 'help' a backstay adjuster).
