Hello, Many posts on this site ask "What do you think of boat X" The answer is always "I had one and it was great" What are some lousy boats? Just curious. Barry

No boat Chrysler 26 Hudson FL
Here is three

Bayliner tried to make a sailboat called the Buccaneer. A real joke. Then there was the Reinell 26 and also the MacGregor 26X.

there are no completely lousy sailboats

some are just more or less lousy than others. Kinda depends on your definition of lousy. There are probably folks who will take issue with Don's list.

A matter of perspective

There were a number of different models of the Buccaneer from 18 to 33 feet long. Some were good boats and some were not so well built. I was told that the 26 foot Buccaneer was designed by the quadraplegic son of the company owner. It was basically ok for what it was made for. Some of these had a very odd look and I think they were quite ugly. The 26s that I have seen were not actually manufactured as it had been designed. The inboard model with a 7 hp diesel would motor at 7 knots which was not too bad. The workmanship was bad for most of the boats mentioned except maybe the Mac. There were several smaller Bayliner models which had retractable keels and when overloaded they would take on water because of the design of the centerboard trunk and keel assembly. I saw one Buccaneer which had several things (manual bilge pump and a book rack) mounted by the use of sheet metal screws run completely through the hull. The ends of the screws were then ground off and painted over on the outside. There was a lawsuit in Michigan (I think) where 10 people or so went out in a smaller model Bayliner (18 foot?) without PFDs but with a lot of drugs. The boat sank as no one was smart or sober enough to secure the centerboard. They did not realize that the boat was overloaded and taking on water. Several people (if not all) drowned and even though they were clearly at fault, the company lost the suit and they ultimately stopped making sailboats altogether. The 30 and 33 foot Bayliners were fair sailboats much better in quality and design.
