55 you should call it quits

I think 55 should be the age limit for sailing and they should pass some legislation.

Jibes, would that be the lower limit?

I think you should think of doing something else when you can no longer perform the needed maintenance for the boat and can no longer go forward to change sails or other required tasks while on the water.

3 of us younger sailors just did the Baja-Ha-Ha. We are 68, 69 and 74 years of age.

Why? Answered

I just wanted to see if any of you older guys were still awake.

Why? Continued.

I am 54 so I figure if I set the maximum age one year from now and increase it each year then I can keep sailing and everyone else can sell me their beautiful boats at discount prices as they retire from the "sport". The real problem is the pain in the joints and muscles doing things like crawling around in the engine compartment like a contortionist trying to work on something. I definitely find that as I get older I need to outsource some maintenance to younger more flexible "kids." I know some 60+ year olds still playing racquetball so I suppose a lot of it is in your mind and also in your exercise routine. So in reality seems to be a state of mind rather than any age limitation. I've always thought being buried at sea would be the way to go anyway, but I insist my wife be the one to push me down the chute.

I don't see very much difference in the effort involved in working on boats or working on houses. Try changing the sink faucet in a
3x 4.5 foot half bath with a cabinet under the sink.

I'm not certain, yet I believe that Olin Stephens was out sailing Dorade on his 99th birthday. I think he stopped sailing when he passed on at 100 last September. Hope I can make it that long.

Age & Sailing

I certainly feel my age, but FWIW, I won my class in the large Newport Beach CA to Ensenada BC race last year with a crew who averaged 74.

When are you too old to live?

Granted, sometimes restrictions are placed on certain occupations that involve the safety of other people and age is used as a factor but how old is old, really. I live in a community that is heavily populated with retired people. I am in my late 50s but there are people in their 80s that I cannot keep up with mentally or physically and sometimes both.

Another thing is that I find it better sometimes to acknowledge a limitation and accept it when it does occure no matter what the reason. An ounce of satisfaction is worth a pound of doing. My yardstick is "Do I feel good doing it?"

My Dad bought this place on the Elk when I was 12yrs old. We have sail from there for nearly 40 years now. He will be 90 this year and still sails with us. He also recently traveled to the Peruvian Andes and hiked up to 10K’
Last year he chased his new girlfriend to China, and I mean Kunming China. Even though he has started to slow down he still has his facilities, and can play a mean game of Scrabble. I hope I shared in his gene pool and can be as active as he is at 80 let alone 90. There is just no question that vigorous exercise is key. I swim 6K meters a week so that I can keep on Windsurfing and Sailing with my love Patty for many years to come.
Cheers
Tom

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed in the things you didn't do than the things you did. Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. EXPLORE DREAM DISCOVER

I think this is attributed to Mark Twain, but whomever said it was speaking to you! I wish I lived closer to this creed, but having on my screensaver helps!
