What a windfall...

So, I go to the harbor office to get my boat inspected (every three years, additional income for the harbor). The inspection was due in November, but I work in Afghanistan and got an extension.

Anyway, I am at the counter and the guy say, "you are on the 34 foot list for swapping, right"? And I said yes, I am. Well, he has a 34 foot slip available and wants to know if I want it. Wonderful.

Saturday I will move my boat over to the slip and I have a year to find me a nice 32 to 37 foot boat. Granted, the cost will go up, but I think that is a minor thing.

Biggest worry is what to do with my Lancer 27. Looks like I will have to list it here on SBO.

What a windfall!

Thanks, Phil. It is, again, another short visit. Headed back on the 16th. One day I can come home and just totally enjoy the boat and the weather.

Maine, I think the city is already helping me with that. hehe. Now, to look for a nice Catalina 34 that is priced to sell and is a 1990 or younger boat. Do have a budget, but what to do with the Lancer. I am thinking of listing it and using the slip as a sublease until I get back. That will help the new owner for 6 months. Or find a Catalina 27 trailer and pull the boat totally. Too many options that I haven't even thought of yet.

Try to stick between 88 & 90 as the plywood in the keel stub had been removed by then.. That is a job I would never want to do again...:neutral: A call to Catalina might give you a hull number where they began that switch over on the 34..

C34s never had that issue. Ever. I have an original '86, so I know.

They have not had the issue, yet, ;) but the wood was still in there on both the 34 & 36 and the change over to solid glass occurred some time in 87. This is if my memory is good from the conversation I had with Gerry Douglas about wood cored stubs on the 34 & 36. I drilled into mine on the 36 to get a sample and it was dry but it still never gave me the warm & fuzzies after doing this job on my C-30. If I had an opportunity to buy a boat without the wood in the keel stub I would certainly weigh that option.

This is great! Thanks for the info. I also saw a few '89s that look nice. We decided on nothing bigger than a 34. It will just mean a higher slip fee, and anything smaller than a 34 we will end up paying for a 34 foot slip anyway. I will look at those links Stu.

Rick, trust me I have been looking for the elusive Challenger 35 ketch. But alas, the only on listed is a deralic and I am not into restorations. LOL Anyway, the wife is excited about the Catalina 34.

The Catalina 34 is a great boat. The change over for some of the stuff was in 1988. The mid 80s catalinas also are prone to blisters. My Uncle has a 1988 Catalina 34 and he has put a ton of miles behind her stern. They could be considered part time live aboards because they spend months at a time cruising the Chesapeake Bay, come home for a few weeks, and then go out again. This is all Spring, Summer, and part of the Fall.

There is a lot of room in the 34. It seems to sail well. Good luck on your search!

Thanks Stu, so Hull # 700+ is good to go. This is nice to know. I know absolutely nothing about these boats. So I, or the wife, may seek you knowledge with the time comes. She tells me that she is willing to do the research when I am gone. This should be a fun adventure.
