How'd you like to find this when you hauled the boat? I heard a clunk coming through the Erie Canal on my way to a Lake Ontario marina but thought I hit a log.

Anyone have any idea where I start looking for a replacement? 1993 H30t.

Thanks All...

Good grief, sorry to see that. Can you tell if it had been cracked for a while and was there any other damage to the boat or driveline? Now I have something else to worry about.

This first thing I would do is call/email Hunter Marine. The company that made them for the Cherubinis is no longer in business, but I do not know who was making them for the later models.

Eddie or one of the other customer support folks should be able to direct you.

Please let us know what you find.

I emailed Hunter and got a response in about 15 minutes. They turned me on to Southeastern Foundries Inc in NC. I have a message in to them.

I have owned the boat for 4 years and check all of this every year as I have to haul it for the winter up here in Syracuse, NY! Have not seen any cracks but the guy at the marina said there has probably been a problem in the past because of the silicone around the seam. Didn't show up on the survey when I bought it.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep you posted.

Bruce,

First of all, howdy neighbor (almost).

Check out greatlakesskipper.com It appears they have just what you need.

Ouch! Sorry about that.. That looks like a classic case of dezincification. Dezincification is what happens when the zinc content is eaten out of the bronze alloy. Look at the pinkish coppery hue working in from the outer edges. That bronze, most likely manganese bronze, should be goldish yellow not a pinkish coppery color..

You want to be careful painting p-struts as the copper paint can accelerate the dezincification process. I would suggest that when you get it fixed you have a marine electrician who knows corrosion come down and check things out. Also check your thru-hulls/seacocks if bronze and rudder shaft. You may want to install a zinc right on the p-strut too.

Here's another example of dezincification.

And a prop suffering from dezincification:

Since you are in fresh water the zinc anode may not be what you should be using. Check the various catalogs for fresh water anodes which are made out of magnesium. I have seen many zinc ones on fresh water lakes that look brand new after 20 years. I have also seen magnesium ones that are pretty well eaten away after 2 years. Not sure if this would have prevented your issue but just food for thought.

Wow! Thank you all for the great input! I've printed all the comments so far and will work with my marina guy who sails in the Bahamas for 5 months every winter and comes back up to the frozen north to run the marina in the summer! How can I get that life? He also rebuilt a 1976 Ericson 36, so he's good. Again--Thanks!

i just got a call from Southeatern Foundries Inc, the one Eddie Breeden from Hunter referred me to. They have the strut in stock and they are shipping it today. $213, which I think is pretty good. Thanks to all! Now I just have to install.
