I recently purchased a 36' Catalina and will be selling my 1977 Vega
this Spring. A few years ago I replaced the original diesel engine
with a rebuilt Yanmar that has worked great.( a very expensive
undertaking) There are 5 sails, all in great shape, a depthsounder and
a VHF. My question is what price do I ask ? I have no idea it value or
what price I should ask. Does anyone have thoughts on a price range?
I'm willing to sell her for a quick turn.

Hi David,

I think the value of your Vega depends to some extent on where it is. I
live in Ireland and I wish to purchase a Vega simular to your one. In G B
and Ireland Vegas with replacement diesel engines including conventional
gearbox (in place of the combi set up) are selling for as much as 20,000
euro = £12,500 = US $ 16,000. I believe Vegas in the US sell for very much
less

Hi David

I agrre with Pat Breen. Being involved in selling Vegas for club members in
the UK and Ireland the prices of a very good one would be about £12500
going down to about £8000 for a Petrol version. With diesel engines costing
£3000 plus fitting you can see how the prices are obtained. The Vega is
still the cheapest performance, safe, reliable cruiser available today.
Anything similar will fetch up to £20000 for a comparable yacht. The price
in the states in less but if you want to bring it to the Uk there is VAT,
transport, flights etc and it soon goes well above the £12500 for top of
the range Vega. You can get a good Vega in the UK for £11000 that is ready
to sail away.

I am sorry I cannot give you an idea of price but as Pat Breen says, it all
depends on where your Vega is located.

Maybe ask 15? I paid 10 for my 71 Vega in 1998, in very good shape with a
new Westerbeke and a very nice accomodation, good equipment.

Hi David,

I've seen Vegas listed anywhere from $4500 to $30,000 (US$). It depends entirely on condition and equipment. My advice: have a professional survey done. You'll get an objective appraisal based on your local market and the condition of your boat. A recent survey will also lend credibility to your asking price and may dissuade potential buyers from grinding you too hard.
