Cape May Whales

Ross, while most of the tour boats have whale watching on them it's a pretty rare sight. Porpoise on the other hand are plentiful and it's not uncommon to have them swim past your boat. Sit on the beach and you'll see them head past at least a couple of times a day. Several years ago when my daughters were in their early teens we were walking on the beach and saw a pod approach some young girls in the water. We hurried down to the waters edge in time to see one come within an arms length of one girl, then suddenly disappear. It was quite a sight. Mike

Ross, while most of the tour boats in Cape May advertise "whale" watching, actual sightings are pretty rare. Porpoise on the hand are plentiful and it's not unusual to have them pass by or even travel with your boat. When we were out of Atlantic City with our previous boat we enjoyed their company more than once. If in Cape May you just need to sit on the beach and you can be sure to see pods traveling in both directions throughout the day. Several years ago on vacation in Cape May, while my daughters were in their early teens, we saw a pod approach some young girls in waist high water. We quickly moved in to see the show and were rewarded with one porpoise approaching a young girl just outside of arms length. We were no more than a few feet away. It remained there for a moment then suddenly disappeared. It was a very memorable moment. Mike

Dolphins/whales on Gulf Coast

There are always dolphins around Panama City and some will eat out of your hand though this is illegal. I had some beside my boat and they let me touch them until they realized that I had no fish and then they were gone. It was a little bit scarey watching them come up at me from down below. Again it is illegal to feed the dolphins but a lot of people do and the dolphins like it!!!! Funny how it is illegal to feed dolphins while thousands are drowned every year in fishing nets. We saw three false killer whales within 1/2 mile of the pass into Andrews Bay a couple of years ago. One actually jumped clear of the water. I would like to sail out to deep water south of New Orleans and look for sperm whales, Supposedly there are about 500 whales that hang around at the edge of deep water. I would think that the chances of seeing a pod is very small but a sailer in Mobile told me that he saw some whales as he was coming back to Mobile from Mexico about 60 miles south of Mobile Bay's Entrance.

It is almost impossible to sail around Mississippi Sound or Mobile Bay and not see any dolphins. Anchor up around Ship or Horn Island and more than likely you will see several. And anywhere offshore in this area, there are lots of dolphins. On the other hand, although I have been out there quite a bit, have never seen any whales, but am always on the lookout. I know they are out there. There was also a Manatee in the Rigolets last summer. Wouldn't have believed it, but there was a pic in the local paper of it.

Pure Chance That we Saw Whales

It was a pretty rough day with big rollers coming in from Wilma. My wife just happened to see one whale leep out of the water. She said a big black dolphim had jumped. On the next wave crest we looked and saw three long slender solid black whales about 20' long. They saw us and disappeared!!!! I looked in my books and the internet and about the only whale that matched was a false killer whale. If my wife had not been looking when it jumped we would have never known that they were there. My brother was sailing along the west coast of Florida and said that a whale approached his boat and then swam under it. They looked over the side and could clearly see it underneath the boat. Then it was gone. Whales don't pose for picutres I guess. You know people still kill and eat whales. They had better be nervous around humans. The japanese even still slaughter dolphins for food.

We saw a pod of Orcas off Port Townsend

last Sept. Simply awesome with all the broaching they were doing.
