Hunter 35.5 LI, NY
Hunter is FINALLY thinking about performance in their sail plan.

"Working closely with Steve Pettengill, Hunter Marine's director of product development, UK-Halsey has created a much more powerful mainsail that takes advantage of the B&R rig that is used almost exclusively by Hunter Marine. The B&R rig that uses swept back spreaders and no backstay, which allows powerful mainsails with an over-sized roach and a fat-head or square-top.

This idea was tried by myself over 10 years ago on a Hunter 29.5 that suffered in light air -- the solution was to increase the sail area. A fat-head made with UK-Halsey's Tape-Drive load path construction was born. The main had full battens with Tides Marine fittings and mast track. It was so successful that the local PHRF committee kept increasing the the boat's rating. They recognized how fast the boat had become.

Recently I worked with the Hunter dealer in St. Augustine to upgrade the performance of his personal Hunter 356. The boat was showing signs of becoming competitive with race-quality dacron sails, but he was ready for a major performance leap. First, we built a Tape-Drive fat-head main with full battens for the boat. He liked it so much that he had Steve Pettengill come up and see it. As this was fairly early in the experiment a jib to match had not been ordered yet. When he raced in the Wednesday night Club Series his performance gains were impressive.

At about the same time, Hunter was redesigning and refreshing the 356, now the 36. It followed that a performance version of the new 36 was tried. The mainsail's design was tweaked by changing the head batten angle, and a matching Tape-Drive genoa was built as well. We are now testing the new boat and sails.

The Original hull design [Glen Henderson] and the new look deck [David Humphries] have produced not only a fresh look for Hunter, but a good performing package as well. The UK-Halsey involvement has taken it to another level."

All I can say is 'it's about damn time!!'

Been Lobbying For A Long Time For This...

... I think even if they only sell a handful, it will make a major impression difference if these boats get some PHRF exposure. It would pay to have some of the more successful and involved dealers get them out there with competent crews. Maybe Hunter could handle the flooring cost and sails to promote it. Glad it's happened. They sure tried with the 27 performance version but couldn't seem to get people motivated.

But Why?

If more sail was needed then the original designer would have handled it.
This way one will end up with a boat which needs to be reefed in 15 knots true wind speed (or less?). Then the handicap will be made more onerous so that when reefed it will make the boat's performance compared to handicap worse.
So we get a speed improvement in light airs but only to be slaughtered by a revised handicap. The total sail area will be increased by about 9% and the only thing which is not taxed is the build and quality of the sails - so this is where I feel the main benefit lies.
Were not these gaff head mainsails just a rule cheater for Americas Cup boats?
Yes the additional area is high up and in stronger wind but it also looses the benefit of having the increased airspeed resulting from the jib slot.
The Centre of Lateral area of the sailplan, and thus the balance, of my H376 is already far too far aft and she becomes very hard mouthed when on the wind in any strength. Moving the CLA even further aft will make matters worse unless the mast is moved about a foot further forward - and this will mean moving the main bulkhead forward so a smaller forecabin etc.

And you get an ugly looking boat to boot.

Sorry Alan, with respect, I don't buy it.

Re: But Why?

Yea, but, I think for (many?) PHRF rules, there is no penalty for a fat top main. And, if you can add some foresail area, the overall force might stay nearly as intended. Also, I imaging the mast is optimized, even if not moved, for the intended sail. Actually, this is exactly what the prior owner of my Vision 32 did to her and it transformed the boat and he did decently in club races (especially for a free-standing mast). At least this way you get back the benefits of the rig's intent.

Cheers! I have always wondered why Hunter did not take advantage of the B&R rig by using a main with an extra large roach. Especially since so may other types of sailboats with no backstay do this.

As for beauty - it is in the eye of the beholder - and as a modern style boat - why not use a modern style sail?
