Wet sole problems

To make a long story short, the winter had gotten away from me and I let two snowfalls go by without checking on on my boat. Come two days ago, when I opened up my hatch for some pre-spring cleaning, I was greeted with about two inches of water on the cabin sole. The water had come in through a leaking hatch, which is fixable. I've drained all the water and have a dehumidifier working overtime. Do I have to worry about my subfloor rotting? It's still extremely wet under the sole.

Not to worry.

Because it won't help. Seriously, you have no choice but to do what you are doing. If you can keep the interior warm as well as dry I think it will be fine. The sole is a veneer so that the glue loosening is probably the worst that can happen. And it can be reglued. But that usually only occurs with years of moisture penetration. What happened to your bilge pump?

Had a simlar problem.

Brian:Ed is correct. You need not worry about it, 'cause there isn't anything you can do anyway. Keep the interior warm (not hot) and let everything dry out. Be sure to lift the bilge board so heat can dry out under the sole too.We had a similar problem several years ago when our bilge pump failed and the pack started leaking. There was also a couple of inches of warn over part of the sole. When it dried out it was slightly discolored by it was really just fine.

3rd vote for "no problem"

Had the same problem last year with that much water or more. The mildew and such demanded a complete interior washing (it needed it anyway) but no lasting problems.AndyBaroque (H27 1982)

I agree with everyone else and second the need to not forget the "mildew search". First place to show up is the unfinished backside of cabinet doors.

My bilge pump sucks...or actually, it doesn't suck

I've been meeting to upgrade to an automatic bilge pump with a float-activated device. Mine is the old manual pump, original to the boat.Any recommendations?
