Is the mast deck stepped or keel stepped? A deck stepped mast needs a lot of support as it is subjected to tremendous pressures from the rigging. A keel stepped mast needs less desk support.

It is deck stepped. I have yet to determine if the cabin top under the step is solid glass or cored. I would suspect that if it is cored, it has not yet effected, as the rigging would probably go slack if the core got wet. At any rate, that is something I must determine.

Depends on the type of core and the condition it is in. Just because a wooden core is wet doesn't mean its broken down and rotted to wet slime dust - yet.

Ours was rotted and we used essentially the method cptron described with no regrets. It was way easier to do than I expected.

Any chance your hardware holes are potted giving the impression of 1" of glass layup?? Just seems like a lot to me - battleship glass....

It seems impossible to me. The reason for a core is stiffness with the same or lighter weight than a solid structure. It would be a very expensive way to build a boat and way beyond overkill. Also it would be a detriment to the sailing qualities if a builder was crazy enough to make it 1" thick.

Deck stepped. I will drill into the mast base between it and the comperssion post to see if it is solid glass. I am guessing it is unaffected as if the balsa was under the mast, I would see loose rigging.

How about some Airex foam as core replacement? It will not rot nor will it get damaged by moisture and it is widely used in marine industry.

This boat is solid. The hull is so thick, I could not use the standard vent for a head tank vent because the threads were too shallow and I could not get the backing nut on. This was just below deck level. The cabin top is 1 inch thick. The deck, counting core, glass and teak top layer is 2 to 2 1/2 inches thick. Despite the wet core, there is no cushiness from the cabin top. This is a very solid boat.

Higgs, how are you going to get it in there? Are you planning to cut out the top deck to do the repair?
