Help! Help! I have a 1985, Hunter 31. I have a wet, rotting area on the lower starboard side wall of the aft-berth. The wall is made of formica on marine plywood and it separates the aft-berth and the large starboard locker. It is a puzzler. The rotting area is about as large as a softball. I can not find where the water is coming from. Anyone had a similar problem with your sailboat?? Any guesses? It appears it has been leaking for some time. Any info will be appreciated.

Don't know much about your boat...

OOOPSSS, missed the AFT part :) You don't have an anchor well in the aft section, right :))

exhaust leak

1) I would check the exhaust hose and connections. 2) Check the muffler for a leak. I had a muffler leak due to water freezing when the boat was stored in the winter. the muffler is molded into the boat. I noticed black stains from the carbon that was leaking along with the water. I installed a conventional muffler on top of the built in muffler. 3) Check the scubber hose and connections.

I had the same--

but lesser problem in that only the paint peeled off in that same corner. The water came from two different leaks that I could find. 1: The pedestal base had a leak at the bolt attachments and dripped down into the area. 2: A leak from the toe rail leaked into the aft lazerette then found it's way to the same area. In both cases, the water accumulated in that area due to the slight list to starboard that these boats have. The exhaust hose is too far from the area in question to have been a factor as I have also crawled into that area as well. Hope that can help. You may have to go to the boat on a rainy day and thoroughly check all areas to see what's leaking. All boats work when sailing and new leaks develop but all can be resolved by rebedding deck fittings and tighting the toe rail bolts. Mac Lindsay 1984 H31

Art leak on my 84 H31

Most H31 I have seen have delaminating formica in this area as well as in the head. I don't know if this is you problem, but my 84 H31 had a leak that only showed up while underway (motor or sail). After months of investigation I found that when the boat was underway it squats putting the cockpit scubber drains underwater. The drains were leaking where they were glassed into the hull. The water would run between the hull and hull liner ending up in the bildge where it was eventually pumped out. As of right now I applied epoxy putty and have stopped the leak till the next haul-out when I can properly repair the problem.
