We are looking for a marina on the western end of Long Island Sound for next year's boating. We have spent many years on the Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, but after our trip through the sound on the way to the Hunter rendezvous in Mystic this year we think we would like to try something new. We currnetly drive an hour an a half to our h340 in Forked River NJ and figure that we could drive as far East as maybe Fairfield Conn. in the same amount of time. We are looking for a marina with floating docks so we can "plug in" and hopefully a pool so the kids can swim while I clean the boat after sailing. Any suggestion from our Long Island Sound boating friends are appreciated.

You may want to consider driving another hour to Westbrook, CT. There's a Brewer's marina there (Pilots Point). From there you can sail to eastern forks of Long Island or the Mystic area in about 3 1/2 hours. From Fairfield it would take you a day.

Try two towns East
Brewer's Stratford Marina on the Haousatonic River has a lot of amenities along with floating docks (strong currents though). I'm further up the Housatonic river past the Metro North RR Bridge in a very protected cove(about an hour at Sailboat speed to open Sound). We have floating docks, a nice clubhouse, but no pool. It's a dockominium, but slips are generally available to rent. You may also want to consider the Milford marinas (Milford Boat Works, etc.) 20 minutes to the Sound with the added advantage of being a 15 minute walk from the Metro North RR stop if traffic sounds really bad. From Milford, weekend jaunts go to the Norwalk Islands, Port Jefferson and the Thimble Islands. If you're up for all day sails, you can go further West or East. Hope this helps.

Look into the "Brewers" network of Marinas
That would be a good place to start. They are all up and down the Northeast. They have one in Stamford, and Stratford, CT and Mamaroneck

If price is no object then by all means, try a Brewer Marina. They seem to be gobbling up all the marinas on the East Coast anywahy and soon you won't have much of a choice. But before you commit yourself, check out World's fair Marina at the foot of Flushing Bay. Owned and operated by the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation and undergoing a major refurbishing. No pool. At least 30% cheaper than any place in the region. Floating slips, electricity and water, of course. Easy land access by subway, taxi or private car. Five minute walk to Shea Stadium and twenty minutes by subway to Times Square. An hour to King's Point and City island by water, two hours to New York Harbor. Generally we check Eldridge for the current before deciding tp spend th weeeknd somewhere on the Sound or down as far as Manasquam or over to Fire Island.

...you pay half price once you've used up your free nights. But if you have service done in a Brewer's, their work is warrantied at all the other Brewer's, as well...also nice when you're on a cruise.

great ideas thrown your way. WE are currently at Brewer's Mystic so I am probably a little prejudiced in their direction The one in Pt Washinton Manhasset Bay is nice, it used to be Capri Marina. And, its not deep enough into Long Island where weekend traffic could be a problem. Brewer's also has a marina in I tihink New Rochelle or Mamaroneck. I never kept a boat there but have hear good things about the World's Fair Marina. For a number of years we owned a condo slip at North Minneford Yacht Club on the eastern side of city Island. Nice docks no ammenities. A lot of the owners don't use their slips and rent them. You can usually bargin for a good price since most of the owners are anxious to get tenents to help defray expences. (the same for the adjacent South Minn Y C ) From the entrance to the marina you can see Stepping Stones Light, so you are 3 minutes from the Sound. You can check the bulliten boards there for rentals, or call the managing agent if you don,t mind paying retail. City Island is a VERY interesting place. Chris s/v Tidesong

Ah, only Jimmy Hendrix fans got a smile out of that title. Seriously glad to hear you are thinking about moving a little North. We are currently planning a 2 week cruise for the first two weeks on July 2002 starting from Cape Cod, to Newport, Mystic, Long Island (places to be determined over the winter), then starting to head back North to Block Island, CuttyHunk Island (went there after we left you in Block after the rendezvous and it's a paradise on earth!)
