We have seen varied viewpoints on boat engines.
Which would you prefer and why?
We will be looking at Benny's very close and would appreciate some input.
Looking at 393's, 411's & 423's.
Any input is much appreciated

Yanmar 4JH in the 393, get one from late 2004 or later where they changed it so that the impeller is easily accessed. Think the Yanamar you want is 4JH4E, I have the 4JH3E. The D55 Volvo in the 423 seems to be ok after some teething problems with the heat exchanger. I am not a Volvo fan having had a Volvo2003 which is the worst marine engine ever built.

I'm extremely happy with the Yanmar 4JH3E in our boat. Smooth, efficient and clean burning. Just installed a SpeedSeal Life to deal with impeller access concerns.

I have a Perkins, runs good. I would avoid anything from Volvo. A friend has a Hunter with a Volvo-Penta and it's a POS.

I changed the original VOLVO MD22L to VOLVO D2-55F in 2009.
Runs much better with lower noise than the old one.
The D2-55F from VOLVO is in real a Perkins Type 9H3XN2.22D55 produced by "Perkins Shibaura Engines Ltd"!

I think it's easier to find parts for the Yanmars and they have better service manuals. I have a Volvo 2002 in my boat and the service manual sucks - very vague.

Volvo parts are expensive.

i have 411 with 5230 hrs. on her yanmar,change the oil & fiter every 2 fuel tank fills,still runs like adream,starts 1st. time every time(i beleave thay are giving volvos away to make money the spares)just joking.theres two yards here 1 sells volvos and 1 yanmars,on volvo yard theres moters all over benches,in the yanma yard hardly any being repaired

Yanmar Is My Favorite...so far.

I had a Yanmar on my previous Beneteau and it ran like a top. I see similarities between it and anything (like cars) made in Japan. The quality is superb.

My new boat has a Volvo and so far no issues but I do hear plenty of complaining.

Best to keep up on the preventative maintenance.
