Westerbeke problems

I have a 2002 310 with Westerbeke deisel. There is a lot of vibration at low RPM's which mostly goes away when adjusted but comes back after a few hours run time. It has also broken two motor mounts so far (about 275 hours) and now the transmission has problems. Any one else having similar problems??

From what I have read...

My C310 is on order, so I can only give you the benefit of about 3 years of research and prep time on this model. From what I have read there are several contributing factors: 1. The 2-blade prop seems to vibrate more than the 3-blade. 2. Misalingment of the shaft. The shaft needs to be re-aligned after the boat has settled into the water. 3. Idle set too low. From what I have read, the idle should be at 1,000 rpm to eliminate vibration. 4. Is it possible you have bent the prop on something or is fouled...I assume you have checked this. Hope that helps.

How low is low?

When you say low RPM, how low? The idle should be set to 1100 for the M25XPB Universal (Westerbeke) diesel engine that comes standard in the C310. Running it at lower RPM's will cause excessive vibration and as you have discovered, broken engine mounts and excessive hose chafing. When we first had our 2001 C310 delivered, it also was vibrating, but we quickly found out that the dealer had not set the proper recommended idle speed. Once the idle was adjusted to 1100, no more problems with vibration. Anything less than 1100, things start to shake. Hope this helps.

Thanks to all who responded to my plea. Seems like a major contributor is the idle RPM. Mine was set at about 700. Good sailing to all. Tom Gorman
