I am having a problem locating a part number for the proper thermostat for a 77 westerbeke 30...
I have found an online manual but it does not list a W-30 or a 4-91... although it may be under another designation for that engine, I do not know what that designation would be...

if someone could point me in the right direction for a parts list, it would help a lot... if you would offer up the part number, it would be even better:D Thanks

centerline, have you figured out the Kubota equivalent for your engine and the tractor # yet? If so, then check on tractormsart.com or kubota.com for local dealers and what I've done is call them, order the part and have them mail it to me. Good luck. Beware the caution in the last post of "accuracy" although it was a nice gesture. Having a link to "the other site" would also be helpful.

This is just an example of what I did:

Most Westerbeke engines of that vintage were either Perkins or Mitsubishi blocks..

Easiest method is to yank the stat and head to NAPA or similar....

I got it figured out... the westerbeke 4-91, and the upgraded version westerbeke 30, used a British Leyland block, (not sure if there is an equivalent in kubota, perkins, mitsubishi or any others )

we have a good dealer here for parts and I have since found the technical manual for the engine, so I got my parts and have them installed already.

there was no thermostat in the engine... now it gets up to temp, but someone has installed the wrong gauge for the sending unit. it reads right at 212 degrees when up to temperture... I checked the block and head with the infrared thermometer in several spots and its right at 179.... but I have to put it in gear and run it at a high idle to get it there....

im sure someone removed the thermostat cuz the temp reading was so high, and the only way they could get it down was to take it out... in their attempt to try and solve one problem by changing out a faulty gauge with the wrong one, only caused them to create seemingly other problems in the system elsewhere.... and instead of figuring out the real issue, they removed the only object from the system that will prevent the gauge from reading high... or even allowing the engine to come up to operating temperature.... they would have been better off to leave it as it was and disconnect the gauge so they would not have to look at the needle laying on 212 degrees......

But it sure is nice to have the hot water heater with the heat ex-changer in it... :D
