Westerbeke 13 max rpm

I have a Cal 28 (1987) and a Westerbeke 13 hp deisel. Does anyone know (or where to find out) the max RPM? My thottle handle hits my pedestal preventing it from going over 2700 rpm. Is this the max or should I make adjustments to the handle so that I can rev it faster? Thanks.

Steph,We have the same year 28 Cal.....the same Westerbeke 13 HP engine.....Previous owner stated 2700 to 2800 max RPM....Spoke with head engineer at Westerbeke in 2005 about this same subject....he told me cruising speed 1500 with high at 1800 RPM.....I tried it and believe he was mistaken. We run normal cruising at 2500 RPM and do comfortable 5-6 knots... my max setting with throttle is 3000++ RPM.....you always need to have that extra RPM in an emergency....Hope this helps....throttle/RPM is adjustable....Frank

I also have the '87 Cal 28 with the 13.5hp Westerbeke and find the comfortable cruising range to be around 2500 like Frank said and that it gets progressively harsher as you go up from there.
