I was remembering this weekend that the O'Day 272 manual had a note
asking that the prop be locked in forward or reverse when sailing the272...Sadly though I can't remember whether they said to lock it in forward or in reverse when sailing.
Thanks for your help. Patrick

Usually in reverse, the reason is this gearing is used less often so the wear and tear is is spread out and not constantly on the forward gearing.

Just looked through my Owners Manual for my '87 272LE, and I see no reference to this. For what it's worth, I put mine in reverse if the prop and shaft start windmilling.

It all depends on the transmission. If it's a Hurth, yes, reverse or neutral. Please do a search on "transmission position" to read more.

Thanks to everyone for the info....I don't think it was in the owner's manual, but rather was a decal on the steering pedestal that has disappeared after all these years...but I do
appreciate everyone's information...I also thought I could call
Rudy in Assonet.. have a great Labor Day weekend everyone....Happy Sailing!

Unless the prop is a folding prop, putting the transmission in neutral will cause it to spin and leads to noise that will concern you a lot while you are chasing down the sound and coming up with craY excuses like your centerboard is vibrating harmonic to your speed or the shrouds are vibrating in the wind until you remembered that you just forgot to put the gear in reverse.

Thank you...Had not really thought about locking it off until last weekend when
I could detect the vibration....at that time I was in neutral.....Pat
