What is sailing like on the West River? I might have an opportunity to relocate there.

West River

John: If you are referring to the West River that runs down to Galesville, it is a nice area of the bay to keep a boat. There is not as much sailing actually on the West as the Magothy as the West is actually quite constricted. There are a number of nice and pricey marinas on the West, some have good restaurants and marine services. It is a great jumping off point for exploring and cruising the the mid-to-lower Bay. Also, there are a number of wonderful anchorages nearby on the Rhode and South Rivers. Email me if you'd like more details.

Great spot..

I keep my boat off the West/Rhode rivers. Very nice area, lots and lots of boats and nice distances to weekend cruising spots (St. Michaels, Solomons, Oxford, Annap.) Once drawback is due to all those boats: the West River is more like 395 in DC (or 695 in Balt.) on the weekends. All the huge powerboats throw out wakes beyond belief. Add in many, many sailboats, lots of em large, and you've got a real traffic jam. The mouth of the river is a crabbing spot and everyone has to fit through a narrow pot free zone. It can be pretty harrowing with all the traffic. But sometimes that can be fun too!
