I am considering a Gulf Stream crossing direct from West Palm Beach to Freeport Grand Bahama. Any information or personal experience sailing in the Northwest Providence Channel would be appreciated. I have heard the current in this channel is even more intense than the Gulf Stream. Capn' Brent S/V Elena Lua 1990 Hunter 33.5

Easy trip

We went to Freeport a couple of years ago in our H380 and had a great time. We picked a good WX window, motorsailed, and had a smooth crossing from Lake Worth Inlet to Freeport in just under 9 hours. We stayed at Running Mon Marina that offered a pretty good long term dockage rate. Their are a couple of other no-service type docks that cost less, but you will start eating up you savings in cab fares to Lucya since there isn't much around them...All in all I would opt for staying Lucya next time...There is also 2 Win- Dixie supermarkets, so getting supplies is easy. Didn't notice any real current in the NW Providence channel, but we stayed pretty close to shore except for the area around Freeport Harbour which requires clearance. All in all a good trip, but we were longing for the Abacos after a couple of days.... Brian s/v CREW REST

Re: Easy Trip

Appreciate the info Brian...We are headed to the Abacos in late April. Actually a friend of mine in a 27ft Canadian Sailcraft is making the Freeport run in a couple of weeks. Thanks again, Capn' Brent

A couple of references.

Brent: Susie & Roger Mummah have made this trip a couple of times in their H'31. Here are a couple of links to their website and some notes that they made about their trip. I'll let Roger know that you would like some advice and he should pop in. I'd suggest that you get his book and have it as a reference anyway. http://www.hunterowners.com/cruise/ces.html http://www.cruisingendlesssummer.com/
