Yes, I'm not worried about it. I imagine they are looking for boats with NY registration numbers, and checking that the registration is current. Revenuers, in other words.

Just be compliant to your state and you are fine. NY requires registration even if you are documented, however you don’t have numbers on your hull. Also puttting the sticker on is optional.... I was told this by a coast guard fellow who does my annual inspection. I get a new inspection sticker every year and display on my mast. Never been boarded but sure my time will come. However the sticker helps identify your boat as being compliant that year so as to avoid these boarding.
I wonder if they enforce the law for registration of dinghies that are powered vessels, that they be registered in the state from whence they come? Mine is. I see a lot of inflatables with motors that have no evidence of being registered anywhere.
NYSail, when I was stopped by SI police, I was told NY regs stipulate display of the sticker on the bow of the boat. You may be in non compliance if the sticker is on the mast, as many boats do. If you look at the instructions that accompany the NYS sticker, it only shows display on the bow.
Out in Gardniers Bay I have seen NY State, Suffolk County, Town of Southold, Greenport and Shelter Island police boats on patrol. Why give any of these agencies a reason to stop and give you a summons?
