I was pretty excited today when I walked in to my local West Marine and they let me know that they were getting new line inventory and that all thier old stuff was 50% off, woohoo! I didn't have the specs of my H23 handy, so I thought I'd ask the professionals. The guy working said that I needed 2x my boat length + 6 feet + 10 feet if I wanted control from the cockpit. Sounded fine to me. I actually had a gut feeling and asked him to cut it 3 feet longer, just in case. So I get to the dock and start throwing on my new lines. Sheets all look wonderful, and now it's time to put up my main halyard... wait a minute... this line's too short! Oh no! So I call up WM and asked them what they could do about it and they said I could return it for 60% store credit. WHAT?! The EMPLOYEE told me to use the WRONG length, and now I'M the one who's responsible?! UTTER BOLOGNA! Oh, and all thier stuff is super expensive too! Rahhh! [/rant off]

Not a West Marine problem

West Marine doesn't have an exclusive on ignorant employees. You can find them almost anywhere. It just stings more at WM.

radio shack

On a similar topic - Remember back when you'd go to RadioShack when you had any electronics questions and the old nerdy guy behind the counter was like an encyclopedia with bifocals? Those were the days. I actually had a RS employee who didn't know what a multimeter was when I asked where they were.

What happened to responsibility

I'd be the first to admit I have no clue what my sheet/halyard lengths are, Regardless, not to defend someone who gives incorrect info but let's get real here - What happened to taking responsibility for the decision to let someone who never saw your boat determine what you should know or need. Who better to figure out what your boat requires than you? Don

Not WM's fault, sort of.

When I first started reading this, I couldn't figure out what line you were talking about. I had to assume you were talking about the main halyard. But why 2x boat length? Shouldn’t it be 2x mast height? If it is for the jib, it should be even longer. It would work, sort of, only if you boat length and mast height were the same. Didn’t it sound a little strange to you when he suggested 2x boat length for a halyard? Sorry guy, I feel for you, but……….maybe you can find some other uses for this line. Since this West Marine was local, I would’ve drove home, got on the internet or a manual, looked it up, and then drove back to buy it. Personally, I have no idea the length of my lines, or size, or type. That’s why I have an owner’s manual. Maybe the West Marine guy was just trying to be helpful, or maybe he’s a power boater and didn’t really know what he was talking about when it came to sail boats. I would not blame WM on this. Yeah, I think he should’ve said something like “I would GUESS your boat needs………,but you should check your manual to be sure”, but it was you who decided to let someone else make this decision for you. I think this was a good lesson learned for you. Save this bit of knowledge for future use. Only you really know your boat.

Boat owners responsibilty

First of all, the employee should probably have said "i don't know" given the number boats outthere. The boat owner should have looked up that information before purchasing. To trust an employee of WM,hmmm foolish.
