Trip to Martha's Vineyard
I just got back from a weeks vacation stoping in Newport, Cuttyhuck Island and Egartown on Martha's Vineyard.I would highly recommend that you place close attention to the currents and tides in Vineyard Sound going to and from Martha's Vineyard. Thanks to Paul Akers recommendation I purchase a book on tides and currents for the area, you can pick it up in Newport, If you hit the tides right you will pick up a 2 to 3 knot tide in your favor going through; you miss it and you will be sailing with a current against you. When I went through Vineyard Sound going home towards Newport my GPS regestered 10.2 knots (with the current) which is the fastest I have ever gone in my Legend 37. What a kick!I do recommend that you spend a night at Cuttyhuck Island. Its about a 3-4 hour sail from Newport and just at the beginning of Vineyard Sound. Nice quant place to stop and it will give you a good start at the sound. On the way home from Edgartown on the Vineyard we were able to get back to East Greenwich, RI in 10 hours. We were flying the entire way back. I expected it would have been two days of sailing which we were able to turn into only one. That gave me last Sunday to cut the lawn; I think I would have rather sailed.Enjoy your vacation!
