Its that time of year and didn't expect filing a tax return could get so complicated. We picked up the packet from the accountant and only had to sign the form for Electronic filing. So simple. Well, the wife and I get home and I glance through the return and sign our copy for the record drawer. My wife signs and chirps "We get money Back".
Almost on reflex I pick up a marine supply catalog and open the dog-eared pages. Then it was like running aground on the ICW. Why did we get money back? Spread out the 2014 return and ran the numbers. Number all add and subtract correctly. Get out the 2013 return that shows we had to pay last year. Numbers nearly the same but didn't itemize in 2013, closer scrutiny will be required. Two hours later and forms all over the living room floor I see the line in question. "Where did this number come from"?
Well it seems my wife's system for record keeping got the best of us. On the nice legal size page of expenses, all with perfect penmanship, were several sticky notes. Where her totals for the doctors, dentist, and charitable was an odd note. A long list of numbers with a total that looked impressive. "What is this"? All I get is the sound of crickets. Then after ten minutes or so "Those are for the fabric I was going to order, I wondered where that went". So fast forward, length X width and add to line 40 on the return.
Called the accountant and get the message machine, "We're busy filing returns, please email us with your concerns". Quick email to stop the filing, too late, the electronic stuff is wicked fast. Reply from our accountant, "We will file an amended return, sorry for your loss".
So the bottom line, "We're paying" plus the additional return. I filed the catalog in the trash and went outside to kick the snow pile. :cussing:
