To do a couple of projects. Mainly I was there to replace the battery in the Nicro Day & Night which had recently become the Nicro Day. While there I snapped a couple of photos for Rich and then noticed a good stiff breeze blowing in.. Screw the battery, I'm going sailing! I took a nice short but brisk sail with winds blowing and gusting between 15 and 30 out of the NW. I snapped this photo, while still on the hook clocking in at 28 knots. I sailed under genny only and had a wonderful sail. Spontaneity is the nice thing about being on a mooring as I can be under way in about one minute or less... The bay was smooth, flat and fast as the winds were off the land so even in 20+ there was less than 1 foot of chop. Does this happen to you too? You go to the boat to do a 5 minute project and the next thing you know the sails are up???

"Does this happen to you too? Maine Sail glanced at your website..beautiful pictures of New England. Made me feel right back at home there for awhile..you've got talent behind that lens!

Not Me

... I have to de-wife-ify the boat before going out which is an hour job. Pictures, pillows, etc. Don't tell her I said that... *x

I live close

I live right on Lake Ontario. it is quite common for me to walk out to the lake front and think what a great day for a sail. The boat is literally 5 minutes away at a dock in a small marina so I just park the car, walk down a couple flights of stairs and onto the boat. I often just go out for an hour or two. When I lived farther, I always felt the need to spend several hours out to make the drive worth it.

Nope...

it takes me 1 1/4 hours to get to the boat. My mind is usually made up!

That's fantastic Maine Sail. I have to wait on a tide always and envy those with mooring systems, but then the dock and power and water and pump out and all else is worth it. But, I know it and I always am looking at the tides and plotting and planning on when I can burst outta here. But then, it happens twice a day, so no big, one just plans on it and I always find myself going with a tide and coming in with one, so I am never fighting against an outgoing current. I didn't see those little puffs you found as shown in your pic (thank yu), but found some steady 15 to 20 knot blows the other day out in the Mobjack and set and trimmed accordingly. It's nice to maintain complete control to be able to point up into it and just briefly stall to let things level out a second, let folks take a break and then when everyone is ready, go again. Yep, it is getting better every day. I was out today again and although it was cloudy, the wind was blowin and it beat the heck outta work.

I'm glad I not so special

If I have a pressing project on the boat I'll start work a couple of hours early so when I leave at about 2 pm to head for the boat there's no guilt and sometimes I get there and its perfect for a sail and the project all of a sudden is not so important. And I love when one of my employee's call me while I'm sailing on one of these playing hooky days and say "are you in the neighborhood" ;)

mines 2 hours away

so I can't just head over to do a 5 min. project. Last weekend I headed up with a long list of things I wanted to get done. My wife decided to come along, but the kids said they'd rather stay home since I would be working. Projects lasted about an hour before we headed out for a night by ourselves at Beckwith Island, it was just too tempting. ;) ( pics I showed you couple of days ago)

It killed me not to sail today but

I had to get the pollen cleaned off the boat. I wanted to go sailing so bad. Then we had a skippers meeting for our summer race series and then got into a big discussion with the commodore and vice. They want to nominate me to be a club trustee. I am not sure they know what they are getting themselves into ;-) BTW Maine, what time were you sailing because where I was the wind was a deffinate SSW at 3pm.

Yeah...

The wind shifted back to the SSW at about 3:00 and there was an ever so slight lull during the shift. I was down on the beach this afternoon when the wind shifted and all of a sudden it got cold down there from the over water fetch.. This morning it was blowing out of the NW and surprisingly blustery and un-predictably gusty. It would go from 15-30 than back to 15 in no time at all. I went back out to the boat this evening and it was SSW at about 10-12. P.S. Why is it that something as simple as running a new wire for a shower sump turns into re-wiring half the boat??

Spontaneity Has Its Virtues

Finished wiping on a rejuvenating coat of polyurethane oil to the teak trim in my v-berth area at 1:00 PM. Somewhat earlier than expected. So go home as planed to start another house project? Or go sailing? Wireless phones are great for informing the wife that plans have changed. (I did invite her to come down to the boat. But she's the type that needs advance notice so she declined in this instance.) Good choice the "go sailing" option. Had a couple of hours of wonderful weather and steady breeze on the SF Bay between Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. An upper level disturbance had moved through earlier in the day, which scrubbed out all traces of haze at ground/sea level. San Francisco literally glimmered in the afternoon sun. And looking out through the Golden Gate, the Pacific Ocean horizon was sharp as a razor. When I left the boat, the new polyurethane coating was dry to the touch.

I'm also far away

So no 5 minute projects. I almost always go with the intent of going for a sail but I also bring just about all my tools and boat supplies with me. I usually plan to work on projects when it's not a good day to sail, but if I get down there and the forecast was wrong and the conditions are good, the docklines are untied and off I go! Life's too short & gas is too expensive, so if the project isn't critical, then sailing always takes the priority!!!!!! Manny
