I replaced the Wema level sensor sending units in both my fresh water and waste holding tanks about 18 months ago. The waste indicator stopped functioning again recently, so I removed it. A hard scale deposit, like salt or minerals, covered the stainless steel cover, float, and slide tube. After cleaning it all up, I checked the unit and it indicated properly. The float just wouldn't slide up and down due to the scale. I thought about greasing the whole thing to help slow down the growth of the scale, but didn't as I wasn't sure how that would affect the unit's operation. Is there a "preventive maintenance" procedure or tank additive to help with this?

The only good solution:

Replace the sender with one that goes on the outside of the tank. The Profile senders http://ferriellosales.com/default.php are compatible with Wema panels and wiring...so the sender is all you'd have to replace. It's easy, and the cost nominal. If your tanks are metal, requiring another internal sender, Profile senders are still the answer...'cuz their sender for metal tanks--which has to go inside the tank--is encased a PVC tube so it never comes in contact with the tank contents...and therefore can never clog or become encrusted with lime scale. It reads the level in the tank through the PVC the same way it reads it through plastic and FG tank walls.

Ernie,

While I don't disagree w/ Peggy; there is one other consideration. I, too, have Wema gages. One of my waste tank gages continues to work properly after 7 years. The other also works, but doesn't go below ~ 1/4 full even when the tank is totally empty. The only reason that I can think of that they still work is that I have only used fresh water to flush the heads since I commissioned the boat. I have also used KO and/or Odorlos, which may have helped. If you have been using salt (ocean) water to flush, that is probably the cause of the scale.

Just Some PM

Ernie, you just have to do some preventive maintenance on the sensor and clean it now and then. I have the WEMA sensor and with the new design. It unscrews and lifts out from the collar for cleaning. Peggy, I checked with Ferriello Sales, and they said that the WEMA panel was not compatible with the Ferriello sensors. According to Dennis at Ferriello, it was the other way around, their panel is compatible with the WEMA sensors. Too bad. I am in the process of swapping out the original holding tank for a plastic, and it would have been nice not cutting a hole in the new tank.

Thanks for the info AND the offer.....

Thanks for all the great info! Everyone's situation is a little different, so I think for the time being I'll just go with the PM advise from Karl. When out on the hook, fresh water is too precious to use flushing the head, so I'll stick with sea water and plan on scraping down the sensor at least annually. Dennis, what a great offer to us! 40 bucks off!! But, when you're compulsive/obsessive like me, BOTH waste and fresh tank gages have to look the same on the panel, so, that would be $200 for me not to have to scrape the scale (and the other less conversational materials) off the sensor once a year. I'll just wait until they both CRAP (pun intentional) out, and then replace them with yours! Ernie Rogers Hunter 380 "Good Timin" Kemah, Texas

Great Service!

I just wanted to get on line here for a moment and let everyone know what great customer service I got from Dennis. Dennis took the time to go over both his system and the one I currently had in my boat, going over the plus's and minus's of both, and offered several tips on how to make the installation easier. Now days, most places just want your credit card number. Bottom line is I ordered the Peggy Special. Peggy, if I can get a deal like this every time, feel free to make more mistakes! Trouble is, you are right almost all the time. Thanks for the advice over the years on this site. I've learned more here from your responses then from any other source.
