Wema Tank Gauges

On my 2000 340 I have the standard WEMA Tank Gauges. The fresh water gauge does not read accurately. When you throw the switch, it will spike up to the full level then, back down to 1/4 level and settle somewhere between empty and 1/4 or so. The tank is full and the same thing happens even when it's half full. What do you think? Gauge, float sending unit? (The holding tank doesn't do this) Can I replace the gauge with better quality gauges and use the same wiring if it turns out it is the gauge and not the float. How do I check the float? Thanks for the help.

I think it is the sender or the wiring

I would check the wiring for continuity between the readout and the sender. There are only 2 wires if I recall correctly and I susspect that one of them may be open. If your switch simply connects the different senders to the gauge, it may be the switch itself. I had only one WEMA gauge in my boat so I am not familiar with the switching arrangement. Since the gauge reads corectly with the other senders, I would conclude that the gauge is not the problem.

Its the sender

I have the same problem I noticed that if i lift the hatch cover under the v berth and tap ( lightly) on the top of the sender unit, the gauge reads correctly For two years i have been planning to replace this but i just might go "Snake River" on the whole shebang water-waste-fuel They seem to be widely liked I believe there heve been a number of posts on these units and a lot of posts deriding wema t

WEMA

I have had at least a dozen WEMA guages on varies vessel and 90 percent have failed. All the problems have been in sending unit or sensors in tank. Does WEMA make a guage that will last?

Me too

I have a 2000 340 and my water WEMA water tank guage lasted for about a year. I bought the boat new and the fuel guage never worked until I finally replaced the sending unit, which lasted about a year. Need to do them both. ajp

The Problem

The problem with WEMA potable water gauges is that they use a small float with two magnets inside which runs up and down on a 1/2" diameter stem. The magnets corrode in the water and grow. This results in the float sticking on the vertical column. I have had to repair mine twice and then the latest is that the stem on which the float runs and which contains the reed switches was found to be broken at the top. Presumably this was due to water sloshing around in the tank. WEMA not good.

WEMA Sensors - Replace with Accugage

I had two water tank sending units fail and one holding tank sending unit fail with less than pleasant results. Got tired of it and replaced them with an Accuguage unit that mounts external to the tank and can't clog and is much less likely to fail. Scott
