I own a Hunter 320 purchased new in 2000. Last year my Wema holding tank gauge stopped working. After going through the archives I realized that this is a common problem with many a sailor. I fixed my problem by first removing the unit out of the holding tank. The unit consisted of a long black cylinder with a plastic tube running down the centre of the cylinder. Inside the plastic tube was a circuit board. I removed the circuit board and then soaked the long black cylinder in fresh water and bleach overnight. The next morning when I was checking the cylinder out I noticed that there was another piece inside this cylinder which was now moving freely. Obviously this piece had been stuck and was now free to float vertically and send the corresponding signal to the enclosed circuit board. I reinstalled the unit and – presto - it worked. Past articles in the archives really helped me as I set about this repair job. I hope all the advice and tips I have got from reading Peggie Hall’s articles will also enable me to keep my system odor free and the gauge working for a long time. Excellent site. Mike Butler

Any Problems Removing the Unit?

Are there any nuts or connections that you need to worry about falling back inside the tank? Thanks for the post.

Removing unit fairly easy

Hi Gordon, There were 6 screws holding the unit in place that I had no trouble removing, although I did peel away the sealant around the screws and cap first. Fortunately on my boat, there was enough room that I could pull the unit straight up and out of the tank. There is not much chance that you would drop the screws into the tank. The hardest part was breaking the seal between the unit and tank. It was worth the effort once you consider the cost and labor involved with installing a new unit. Mike
