Had plans for "Father Day" to get up early and FIANLLY go sailing!
I've been neglecting my poor boat lately, I've been crewing on a few boats and haven't been on her except for some quick work or to check her out.
Busted my kester getting all the work done @ the house Saturday that had been piling up with the rain we've been having here in N.E.Pa.
Got up early, hopped into my MG, put the top down and spend off.
Was ready to spend the better part of the day sailing, (I wanted to repaint the hull where the dock had scratched it and the deck also, so I figured spend the A.M sailing, a few hours "housekeeping" on her, be home in time to fire the barbie up.
I started a habit when I first put her in the water of stopping at the Shell station off the highway pick up a cup of coffee and a muffin, head to the boat, enjoy the coffee and peace of the lake early morning.
Things were going well, got to "Fever Dream", open her up, a quick inspection, all in good order.
That's when it all started...................................................
Knocked over my cup of PERFECT coffee, stepped on my nice fresh muffin!
SHEET!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, just live with it.
Set the sails (hmmm this jib is stuffed in the bag upside down, weird, I'm usuually not like that).
Saw on line when I was eating breakfast, the wind was gonna be light, so I hooked up the E-lectric motor as well as the gas, (my secert to move @ when I'm frying in the sun!).
Backed out of the slip, ready to enjoy the day. Motored out pass the "no wake bouy" and hoisted the jib.
WTF???? I put the jib on upside down!!!!!!!!!!!
A quick look @ to make sure no one was watching, (I had vision of the shore line behind me, EVERYONE lined up pointing and laughing at me).
Spun her @ and motored back close to the docks, scampered forward and quick flipped it @.
I had to work quick, a breeze SUDDENLY picked up and was pushing me into the dock and a really nice boat.
"Ok, that was stupid"!
Fire the gas motor and head to open water.
Got a bit up the lake, cough, cough, the motor dies????
(I had check the fuel before I left, 3/4 tank). This motor is a like a clock, NEVER skips a beat.
Pull, pull, pull, curse, pull.
Flicked the electric on to keep going.
That's when I noticed, I had closed the storage lid on the fuel line that popped outta the hole when I tossed the bumpers in.
OK, just relax, this isn't the first time you've sailed"!
Picked up a breeze and the boat is ALL over the place, like a leaf on the water.
WTF???
Looked down at the line that holds the swing keel, yep, just like I left it a few weeks ago, all wound up tight! The swing down keel was still up!
"Jesus! Now stop it"!
Got it all set up, the tell tails all flying right, finally got some breeze and away I go.
"AHHHH, this is the life"!
Spent a hour relaxing, getting into the zone, (you know)
That's when the wind left me.
I could see some WAY over there, head over, it'd move, "there it is", head over there, (much easier witht he E-lectic motor, you can sneak up on the breeze with that. @ batterys and i can 3 hours on middle setting)!
2 hours of this, move, a few moments of breeze, then "glass water".
I could see other boats, their sails full at other parts of the lake, but mine...... noooooo.
At noon I called it, (my water bottle was empty, my belly hungry, and my bladder over full).
kinda motored/sailed back to the dock.
Got 100 yard from the dock and the breeze was awesome right there! I should have played "in the yard" here at the dock!
Tacked back and forth a few times, but the powerboat, jet skis and bladder told me it was time to head in.
Dropped the jib, wind vaned the main and headed in.
Just entered the slips and remembered "The bumpers"!!!!
reverse, gunned the engine, clipped on the bumpers, drifted (almost to the same dock and boat, good thing the guy wasn't there!! the boat must like mine!!)
Glide on in, did the 90 degree turn, that's when a wave from a power boat, (or a meteor) shoved me 2 slips down from mine in like 1 nano second! (I usually have the docking thing down like clock work, never had a problem.
(That's what's nice about having a 22' boat with a beam of 6', lots of dock room)!
EEK!
Some bobbin and weavin, (again I look like "Sinkin Steve the Wanna Be Sailor"!!) and I'm re-aligned.
Finally into the slip, tie her off.
Put everything away.
Over all it was "Three Stooges go Sailing"!
But, ANY day (even this one), sailing is better than painting the porch floor!
Joe
