Good Luck, Alan. We'll look for your results here. Red Herring splashes a week from today (May 4), and our first race is May 16.

Masthead set-up

My boat started life as a fractional rig. This means the spinnaker hoist is just above the forestay. Many frac rig boats opt to use masthead spinnakers for the extra performance, J-29's are prime example. By adding a bow sprit of 5.5 feet and a masthead spinnaker halyard which added 6 feet to the hoist I can carry a significantly larger spinnaker. It works out at about 70% larger than stock. More significantly the spinnaker is carried further away from the main and higher allowing for deeper and faster runs especially in light air which Long Island Sound is notorious for in mid to late summer.
