Being somewhat of a welder, and of course not knowing all the answers, I was wondering if I remove all the electronics, from my vessel, can I weld on the trailer without removing the boat? Im sure there are more in the know than myself out there. Any info will be greatly appreciated! thanks Dennis

welding

Dennis, You can weld on the trailer with out removeing any of your electronics. With out going into to much detail, the boat will not be the ground when you weld. The ground will be from the welder on a pig tail and when you make contact with the welding rod. The boat has nothing to do with the welding process.I would say that you need to put up some type of proection for the boat near the welding area.20 years in fab shops give me this info.

thanks for the info!

I wasnt sure about the boat, but I did think that the electronics would have to be removed, or they would get fried from the arc welder having so much electricity going through it! Thanks for that info it greatly helps!

disconnect electrics befor arc welding

I’ve never heard it recommended to weld on a boat - UNLESS allthe electric/electronic are completely disconnected (Pos and Neg). I’m not certain I understand Jerry’s advice (so he could be absolutely correct), and would appreciate elaboration . Respectfully, Gord May

Arc Welding

I think what Jerry is saying is the path of the current flow would be from the welding rod to the ground wire of the welder thru the trailer. The boat, if fiberglass, should be insulated from the trailer and not be a problem. If the boat is metal, the only way it would be a problem is if the electronics use the hull as a common for their power and I really doublt they would. If still unsure, take the safest route. Hope this helps Sail On.... Terry

thanks one and all

Yes the boat is fiberglass, and it seems like years ago, I heard someone state that all the electronics should be removed or disconnected prior to welding on the boats trailer, or perhaps the boat itself, should it need something! Fortunately I dont have a whole lot of electronics aboard, so doing the disconnect will take no time, although just perhaps Jerry is also right. 20 years experience certainly would be in the know! Thanks one and all Dennis
