Wow - no kidding, "weird" sailing news, indeed! Your post is appropriately titled.

That is interesting that they noted the body "resembled a mummy". Surely the combination of heat/humidity and being out on the open water contributed to this?

Interesting that the Jeanneau was found afloat and dry, dis-masted 6 years after it disappeared. It sank after the Philippino fishermen towed it in. That's a good boat!

I'll bet nobody else on this forum will ever complain about an odor in their boat. Yikes!!! It's also impressive how they can capture pics of looters and refer to them as rescue. Oh my, too weird. Nice post there 25YL.

I couldn't fathom how a body could be mummified after a few days. That and seated at the table. With the mast gone I would assume the dismasting occurred prior to the guy dying. One helluva boat to remain floating for that length of time. I'll be curious to find out more if it comes out.

The guy disappeared in 2009 and was found recently, in a dry boat in the sea air...mummy. And those aren't looters, they are Salvors exercising their rights under Maritime Law. This ain't Kansas.

I dunno, they look a lot like pirates swarming a prize to me, regardless of "Police" photo credits. I pity the poor fool that tries to salve that boat...although the solar panels appear to be OK. Too weird!

I don't get it.
He's been missing 7 years, and when they finally find him he's only been dead a few days?
The boat floats for years in storms etc and suddenly sinks when they tow it in?
It was dismasted and damaged long ago but the guy died from natural causes at the table? A few days ago?

How about the guy was sitting at the Nav Station, listening to the weather, and had the Widowmaker. The boat drifted for years during which it was dismasted. He became mummified from heat and dehydration. I don't think he died recently based on the mummy report. That was some speculation from an authority who didn't have the results of an investigation. Or maybe that official was trying to provide some comfort to the family. It sank while being rescued? It's happened before. Looters or salvagers? What's the difference?

I was remiss in not including my sympathies to the family.
Yeah...me too! If it turns out to be natural death, then my apologies and sympathy to the family of the Captain of that vessel. I'm pretty sure that's not how I want my family to discover my last chapter. Carry on our wayward son!

They stated the GPS was still there, I wonder if any tracking records exists in the GPS memory.

Kind of amazing that a dead guy safely "navigated" (well except for being dead) for years with no incident.
Must have had several storms?

My condolance to the family, But he lived the way he wanted to. we all take a chance when we go to sea. I would rather die in my boat sailing than in a hospital bed with monitors attached to me. just waiting to die, to bad the boat did not sink would have been a good burial at sea for a sailor. I will raise a glass a toast to you brave soul.

The LiveScience website also posted a story on this topic. As others have said, I should have included my condolences to the family of this sailor in my original reply. May he Rest in Peace.

I saw a similar story today. Notice the mildew in the woodwork. It still seems bizarre he was mummified with so much mildew indicating decomposing biological agents present. The whole story is rather discomforting. Leaving his wife two years prior to her death and then writing a note to her. Hopefully the family will come to peace with all that has happened.

The reports are wildly conflicting.
One says that a racing boat found Sayo on Jan 31, a full 25 days prior to the discovery near the Philippines, and reported it to USCG in Guam. Yet the Philippine coroner says post-autopsy that captain Borojat had only been dead for 7 days.
I saw the pictures. I'm no doctor, and am not going to get descriptive, but there are indications that he had been there at the chart table for a huge amount longer than 7 days.

Live Science guys are saying a much more plausible 1-7 YEARS .. which may have been a mis-translation in the original report.

Other than the guy being dead tragedy part it would be a heck of a durability endorsement for the maker of the boat.
