can anyone tell me the weight, for trailesizing, of an O'Day 20? Specs say that displacement is 1600 pounds and ballast is 400 pounds. How do I translate this to actual weight? Thanks.
Hi Mark, Actual displacement means how much water is displaced by a given object. If you were given a figure of 1600 lbs. displacement that should include the ballast figure. That usually doesn't include the weight of stores, fuel, motor, people and etc. The trailerable weight of a boat can be quite a bit more than advertised displacement. Terry
Archimedes Principle - A body partially or completely immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of fluid displaced. Your boat will displace water with a weight equal to its own, then float. Only submarines have weights that exceed their displcements under normal circumstances. So - you can use the #1600 number as the weight of the empty boat. The #400 of balast is included therein. The problem, as Terry points out, is that we tend to throw all sorts of stuff into the boat before we trailer it so the weight can be considerably increased. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
