I am restoring an old Yamaha 30 and considering removing the engine from the forward locker and shaft and replacing it with an outboard on a stern bracket.Has anyone done this and if so how does this affect the performance of the boat.
To be more precise what adjustments need to be made to the sail plan to cater for the reduced weight in the bow??

Moving the engine

I have a Yamaha 25-II with the engine forward. It was out of the boat for 4 months for a rebuild and the boat sailed fine without it - maybe better, with less weather helm. It's so subjective, though.

A 30 footer with an outboard is going to be disappointing. The propellor in a seaway will likely come out of the water and the boat is to heavy to have much hope of slowing her down when docking. I have read that the transom is too thin to support the thrust of an outboard.

Of course, your experience may vary.

Richard

Richard, I just took my maiden voyage in my new (1978) Yamaha 25 today. I'm eager to learn all the ins and outs of the boat.
