The fresh water cooling pump on my 84 Universal M-18 diesel has begun "weeping," and a small amount of coolant seeps out. Looking at the very basic drawing in the owner's manual, it appears to have a replaceable mechanical seal. Is replacing it a simple remove/replace job, or does it require pressing out the old seal and pressing in a new one? Any tips or input would be appreciated! Randy

Weep now Cry later

I had the same weep develop on the water pump of my Yanmar. The price of a new waterpump was a couple of hundred dollars. The rebuild kit was like 60 dollars, so I rebuilt. The main bearing is pressed and will most likly take a machine shop to press out. The whole process to take our the seal and main bearing to replacement was an hour. BEWARE of not nicking or denting the shaft around the keyway. If you nick it, you will play hell getting that bearing and seal to set right. This is because the tolerances are so close that a nick WILL keep the assembly from going to gether. NO PLIARS or VICE GRIPS! Use lubricant on shaft and have the machine shop press the assembley out. If yours is similar to mine you will see a C-clip below and above the bearingthese get removed prior to pressing. Hope this helps. If you don't nick the shaft it really is a pretty simple task.

save yourself lots of grief and buy a new pump...

I paid $125.00 for a new pump for my M-18, and it came with a new impeller. I am pretty mechanical, but after spending about 6 frustrating hours and $90.00 to rebuild the pump, it still leaked, and that included a new shaft. There is just too much that has to go perfectly for the rebuild to work. So now the old pump is my spare and the engine runs cooler than ever, probably because the cam may have been worn, too. Good Luck!

New pump installation--Difficult?

Is it difficult or involved to install a new FWC pump? Or does it simply bolt on? Thanks for any further input... Randy
