Hi, Dan.. usually this means that the water seal has gone bad and it is time to rebuild the pump. The seals (Yanmar part# 128170-42110 and 124240-91450) and bearings (24101-060004) are standard parts that can be bought at a bearing supply place, or from Yanmar; the shaft (part#128170-42060) may have worn where the seal contacts it and may need to be replaced as well. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that pump rebuild yourself, talk to the Mack Boring folks about a rebuild, or a new pump assembly (part # 128170-42000). When the leak gets worse, seawater will get into the crankcase and contaminate the oil and really make a mess. Might as well change the impeller too. (128170-42070, gasket 128170-42090)) Some of these part numbers are old numbers and when you call for them, the parts guy will cross reference to the correct ones. Not a bad job but moderately expensive. Good Luck.

This is a real easy fix to rebuild the water pump. I had never done anything like ti and I am not very mechanical. The only tool you really ned i a vice to push the rubber seal in and out. You might also need a special pliers for removing the snap ring. All of the parts cost me about $60.00. A new water pump was about 450.00 so it a no brainer. The only part that was bad was the rubber seal $9.00. Be sure to lay out the parts in the order they come out so assembly is easy. I used a socket to press in and out the seal and just squeezed it back together. Took 20-30 minutes.

If I could do it anybody can do it

Besides laying all the parts out in order, I like to take numerous photos of the process so I can reassemble if something happens like I get distracted and go away for a week and forget or if the whole disassembled display gets knocked over or if I forget to notice which way up something goes. Digital photos have saved me many times.

Block zinc is port side just below the cylinder head, under a little flat plate with two bolts. Part # 27210-200200. I can't tell if there is another in the engine but I think that may be the only one. Your service manual should have a reference to where they are.. good luck Dan

fixing the raw water pump

i have a 3qm30 that too was leaking water through the weep hole. always you should look at the shaft to see if you have seal wear grooves in it . it won't do you any good replacing the seal if you see grooves. i had to get a new shaft machined, since it is no longer made. now there is also a fix for your old shaft that i have done to fix the old shaft as a spare. it is called a speedy sleeve. it is stainless and you drive it onto your shaft right where the seal rides. little lock tight to seal between the shaft and speedy sleeve and your ready to go.

Re: fixing the raw water pump

The freshwater pump on my 1GM10 was leaking when I bought the bought the boat. I read some where that this salt water leak could cause corrosion on the oil lines that run below it. They were easy to replace (yeah, they were very corroded). Just one more thing to check.
