This past weekend we had our Sheboygan to Manitowoc race. 21 NM one way. My Dad and I sailed up on a pursuit race on Saturday. We started first because as you all know the Capri has a great PHRF rating. Out of 11 boats we took 6th, beating a J-29 and Olsen 25.
On the way back, we all started together. I just purchased a spinnaker from "Kudzu" (thank you again, it worked great). I got it last Thursday and sailed it Sunday on our way back home. The wind was blowing at 15k strait south on the stern. We set the kite at the start and never changed course. White knuckling it for 21 miles, we finished in 5th place. We had the boat at a top speed of 8k surfing down 5 foot swells. I am curious what others top speed has been? This is the first year that I have been sailing a spinnaker and from what I have noticed, the Capri is a PHRF killer down wind.
Now you might be asking yourself why we finished 5th if the Capri is so fast down wind. Well, just after the start we took a knock down and our spinnaker sheets came un-cleated. We had to do about 3 - 360 until we could grab the sheets and run them back to the blocks. Once we got our sheets re-cleated and the chute filled we had wasted 15-20 minutes. The entire fleet was about 1/2 mile away by then. We were able to maintain our distance and even gain on some of the boats. When the final PHRF scores were calculated, we had a corrected time of 3:10:15 the winning boat, a J-80 had a time of 3:04:21. Not to bad for a bunch of greenhorns two handling.
