If daysailing I don't usually go out in rain. If cruising there isn't a choice really, well I guess I mean if I'm on the boat and all.

Since there is always work to do on the boat, I am more prone to do boat choirs when the weather inspires me to do so.

If it is going to be just a two day trip, I am more inclined to stay in the slip if it is raining and just stay on the boat. I usually do some work on the boat and try to clean it up.

On longer cruises it is just unavoidable.

Rain is not a problem just shuck on a slicker. Often times it will be raining during our wednsday evening races and everyone just goes out regardless. Now lightning is another story. Also if the wind is up 35 knts+ its a little much for the rig on the Mac. Now I like a exciteing sail as much as the next girl but I get a little protective of those days that are just begging to bust something. We had a couple nights when boats returned with their geona in rags and some peice or another of the rig busted.

It depends; if I have to go I go, and If I don't need to I don't. I remember going out of Baltimore one morning under a steady rain with temperature in the 40s and no proper boots but yet also remember shower hunting in the Bahamas to cool off and bathe. Don't forget to get your cell phone and wallet in the cabin before the squall hits.

Rain? I do not understand this Rain of which you speak, what is it? Actually, since it only rains in the winter in SoCal, it usually goes along with chilly weather and nasty wind and sea conditions, I have been out in it for sure, but not on purpose. It's just easier to wait till the next weekend, when it will be gorgeous!

Rain itself isn't bad.....it is just when the rain moves in with a cold front that spells trouble in my region.

Rain

A bunch of pussies, I say. We sail year around in the PNW. I suppose you could call me a postal sailor. However, I do keep an eye (ear) on the weather forecast for safety purposes, but gale sailing sure can get your blood boiling.

While traveling N on the ICW left Charleston in the early morning, harbor smooth as glass. As the sun rose and convection began the wind became SW at 10, perfect for popping the jib and letting her run past Bull's Bay and McClellanville. When we made the turn into Winyah Bay and ran N the front hit, bringing torrential rain, wind NE at 27 gusting to 40, chop kicking at 4 feet and visibility down to 1/4 mile. There was no choice at that point but to furl and motor on to Georgetown and hide for the next two days. Best thing about that was we arrived in Georgetown as the fish/shrimp house was locking up: we asked the owner to sell a pound of large shrimp. He went back to the walk in, came out with a five pound sugar scoop of jumbos, and said, " Welcome to Georgetown, they're on me."

That is cool.

I got caught out off of Smith Point in the Chesapeake Bay going into the Potomac River in 40 knots out of the North West. I got the crap pounded out of me for 5 hours until I got into the Coan River. Once the anchor was down we stayed for two days until the winds subsided.

Lovely early April sailing in the Chesapeake Bay Region.

1998 i was asked by a now former friend to help take his irwin 37 aft cockpit south from lost angeles to san diego---i did ----we went from lost angeles to avalon(ia) then left for oceanside wherre he was going to berth his irwin. was an el nino year, so alll the weather was unusual -- nothing was as normal.....we surfed down 30 footers southwards in some really goood winds and i was having a lot of work trying to get stoopit irwin to take to surfing---she wanted so to broach.......he would come out of the cabin to assess the situation---pop his eyes open and run back down into the cabin for another few hours-- i didnt know what his fuss was about until i looked over my shoulder to see the nicely formed huge waves following us.....hate irwins and will never sail another but i had a good time otherwise---wind and water are spozed to be for sailing----

I'm not a NW native, but it's become very apparent to me, that if you want to sail in the NW, you can't wait for the sun (because there isn't any wind on those days). Maybe that's why I saw several boats out just sitting this evening (watching the reflection of their sails drying?).
Now skiing in the rain? THAT'S SOMETHING I HATE!

I've found the same thing in Central NY. Sun shining = water like glass. Of course, I started sailing a Sunfish and Hobie 16, where getting wet is all part of the experience.

This past weekend it was Blowing like stink on saturday and on sunday it rained hard almost all day. We were anchored on the Wye River so we just stayed there. If if starts raining while I am out I will just continue but I don't believe that cold AND wet are necessary when I want to play.
