What are some ways that I can try to correct the weather helm on my 28.5? It seems that whenever we're sailing close-hauled, I'm constantly fighting the wheel.I know it's got to do with the mast rake, but I'm not sure which way to go. Also, I've always thought the boat was kind of tender(shoal keel). Has anyone ever retrofitted a bulb or wings on their keel to make this model more stable? Thanx

weather helm

What size genny are you using? If you are overpowering the boat (overcanvassed)that will cause weather helm. Most Hunters need to reef at about 18-24 knots of wind. As a former owner (fin keel)I found the 28.5 quick to heel to about 15 degrees but quite stable after that, up to about 20 kn, then reefed she will settle right down.

Try easing the main

first before you start getting too radical. It's Ok if the front third of your main is luffing some. If a luffing main makes you feel uneasy, try moving your traveler to leeward. If that doesn't help than you probably need to reef. You can also try taking some of the aft rake out of the mast if possible but start with the easiest solution first. You could also replace the main with one with less roach. The objective behind all these mehtods is to move your center of effort forward or, as is the case with reefing, to move the CE lower As for modifying the keel, remember that the engineers who designed the boat built the specs into it for a reason. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, modifying one spec will more than likely require a modification of something else and on and on in order to achieve the desired effect. Hope this helps some. -Roland S/V Fraulein II

28.5 weather helm

First let me tell you don't have to fight weather helm with this boat. It can be neutralized to the point you will get lee helm (not recommended). You do want some weather helm as a precaution. EVERY boat suffers from weather helm if not tuned properly not just Hunters. Today I was out in 10-15 with a 150 up on my 28.5 and the boat would steer itself for several minutes without me touching the wheel. I do not have a wheel brake. I have the deep draft. Read the tuning instructions for the mast. You really need to do part of this while the mast is unstepped. This really helped me with my tuning. You can rake the mast forward as a starter. You do not have to live with excessive helm so read and experiment and you will get a nice handling boat. Good luck and happy sailing.

Ease/depower main

Weather helm is caused by too much power on the main, which acts like a big lever to spin the boat to weather. Also, a heeled boat wants to round up to weather. Boat these forces will result in an overly tensioned or overpowered main. Ease the pressure on the main by easing her out, depowering the sail (make in flatter with halyard and outhaul), or reefing.
