Weather Forecasts

Have been watching the weather pretty close for the raft up this weekend. The NOAA forecast is for N or NE winds from 10 to 15 on Thurs. night. Weather channel forecast of Thurs. night is for WSW winds 5 to 10. I'll be anchored up between here and Petit Bois on Thursday night. Who to believe??? Guess just flip a coin, pays your money, takes your chances.

I have found weatherunderground.com to be pretty accurate around these parts.

NWS has botched some pretty important forcasts lately... I tend to look at as many sources though like you are doing just to be prepared and take a look at the weather myself to see what they are basing their forcasts on.

To get a look at what most forecasts are based on, look at the models. One link to U.S. weather models is at http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/nam/12/index_sl8_l_loop.shtml.

This is a loop view, during which you can see things evolve. Knowing how to read a wx chart will help understanding the loop.

So many wrong forecasts on the trip from NC to west coast Florida. I miss my web cam on Lake Erie where I could actually see the conditions before I drove to the lake. We used at least three sources before going offshore. Usually it was a matter of the change coming much sooner that predicted.

Easy, where are yall going to hide from a northeast wind? casino in Biloxi? You probably have the http://www.sailflow.com/
place. They have a good wind forecaster that you can roll forward on an hourly basis.. Yeah.. well, it is close sometimes. Best to you guys!

THis time of year I find that weather forecasts are a bit iffy. It was supposed to be south winds today 5-10 knots but it was south at 15 steady and blew higher in some gusts (I heard a few gusts of 21 on the VHF radio).

Cruising this time of year is something that should be done cautiously in my area and always have a good plan B.

hey Phil,
Ive been watching it also and sofar it doesnt look good for dropping the hook in open water. Of course that can chnge before then. im still keeping a sharp eye on this site.

Guys

Myself and two ther boats from Pascagoula/Moss Point are gonna head out early towards Petit Bois Islands Saturday morning were we hope we can enjoy some good sailing and hopefully raft up for lunch. Winds permitting I may spend Saturday night out there but will have to see.

ok guys, stop it, i am stuck in nova scotia, forget the wind, a night on the water would cause frost bite and freeze up lol, i feel so bad you have these wind issues while my pellet stove is churning wood to beat the band. but you are right, the forecasts never seem very accurate, up here i keep an eye on the bouys that broadcast conditions, usually flow up the coast so you can see it coming, no help to you guys, but works here

If needed, we can run up the Pascagula channel, and go off to the right. Charts show plenty of water, 6 - 7 , and can get close in and protected. I'm still seeing conflicting forecasts. Some NE some SW, clocking around to East. I guess if the SW clocks all the way around, will pass all the NE and N quadrants, and make the forecst right. I'm leaving in the morning, regardless. Thurs. night may be the wost, as plans are to anchor up, N side of Cat Island.
Whatever, will see you guys over at Petit Bois on Fri. nigh or Sat.
