Is there such a thing as an accurate forecast? Sometimes they are right, but the ones I get are really good at batching up wind forecasts!

The problem is that you are looking at a forecast that is nearly a week away. You might as well roll some dice. Keep checking these apps daily and you will likely see them converge with similar forecasts as the weekend approaches.

Be your own forecaster. Look at the raw weather maps and see what kind of conditions are west of you. Look at the direction of the highs/lows/fronts and how close the isobars are. Whatever is going on a 100 or so miles to your west will get to you today....

Or as many do down here, forget the weather forecasts. The saying around the fishing boat launches is "Ya gotta go to know." I've missed out on too many great fishing days because I trusted the forecast (from the day before). ;-)

in gulf of mexico, noaa means not one accurate assessment-----only time i found anything truth there was when the real time person was hollering at us to seek immediate shelter when we were 60 mi out of apalachiacola in middle of night surrounded by lightning and seas were confused and nasty....good heavy weather experience...

You can get the GRIB weather files for free and if you study them long enough DIY it :)

Even one day out or the morning of they still can't get land weather to agree with Bay weather. Been out a lot of times when the weatherman said it was going to be overcast and no wind only to find it sunny and 15 knots.
The only way I know is to go sailing. Bring your wet weather gear and get used to sailing in the rain, make sure you have light wind sails and heavy.
As I remember it sailing is fun in just about all conditions except extreme cold.

So throw away all those "apps" and just go sailing. That is unless you are looking for that day when the wind is not too strong or too light and the temp is not to hot or too cold and the cloud cover is "just right"....... Happens once a year around the 7th of July and never on a weekend. ;-)

Weather forecasts have nearly been the death of me. I have been a private pilot as well as a sailor for decades. Once with a 30 minute old aviation weather report calling for no low level icing I encountered just that. That resulted in being unable to maintain altitude with wide open throttle. A one shot landing approach followed. Another time with a one hour old report I encountered an unpredicted squall line. By the way aviation weather forecasts are only provided for a max of 24 hours ahead.

Just think about how much air volume there is versus how many points are sampled by weather stations. So when somebody complains about inaccurate forecasts several days in advance I have to laugh. I have learned not to expect so much from a tiny data collection system.

Passageweather.com for general info, including the Great Lakes

If you have SSB/Ham, listen in to the weather routers such as Herb Hilgenberg or Chris Parker when in those target areas. Atlantic and Caribbean basin.

Note to "Haggy" .... "Caribbean WX" for accurate router forecasting for the Gulf, east side of Central America and 'de islans' down to Trinidad.
www.caribwx.com/ for frequencies and schedules.
Fee required if you want to 'talk' to Chris for routing purposes. Chris Parker is the 'gold standard' for accurate Wx in the Gulf of Mx and the Caribb.

For your own forecasting: "Mariners Weather Handbook" by the Dashews (expensive and VERY technical)

NOAA probably has too many 'lawyers' to issue good forecasts anymore. Use NOAA only if youre having a pool party, or are expecting a hurricane etc. Very UNRELIABLE for maritime weather on a local scale.

Come on guys, if you are going to sail I think a bare minimum is to look at synoptic charts.b not sure what you Americans call them, but there you go. Grib files are great, if you want an app try windfinder or weathertrack. These are focused at sailing weather and detail.

But DJ, you would have to actually learn how to read those little squiggly lines. Now if you had an app for that..... like the one that reads those 2D bar codes and tells you everything you want to know.......

On a related note, how many folks only sail when the weather is:
perfect
perfect to nice
perfect to OK
perfect to bad
perfect to horrid

do learn to read the squiggly lil lines--could save yer life. besides is fun.. i learned at age 8 how to do that--is still fun. my goal when small was to find amelia earhart, so i had to learn how the weather worked so i could find her by looking in the right place........i am kinda not into thaT nymore-besides they sed she was found, mebbe--but the weather is still fun to read --i do not listen to the words or look at the still pix of sunny days made for those who do not sail....i prefer to live thru the sailing adventure..

yeah, go figger--cannot typo but i cAN REad squiggly lil lines.....

what weather?

There are several very good books on weather by Alan Watts, one I remember "Crosswind Rules". They are generally for the temperate regions, but are informative.
Passage weather seems pretty good (I've made 3 1500 mile passages & sailed 2 winters in the Caribbean using his info), but they become less accurate after 4-5 days & also seem to be about 12 hours off on weather changes; still about the best I've found.
If you really want accurate weather, get a weather fax & learn to read the various products.
a friend suggested http://www.windguru.cz/int/, which gives VERY accurate real time winds for some of the remotest places, but also the Caribbean.
As a professional captain, I always said, "If I was as good at my job as the weather people are at theirs, I'd have sunk this boat twice already, today." Wouldn't it be grand if one had a job where one gets paid to be wrong most of the time, with no consequences?
Good Luck.
