I pulled my 2003 331 Beneteau for a bottom job along with a cutlass bearing replacement. I hired a local professional to pull the prop and clean it up. He inspected my shaft and said it needs to be replace. This is where I was dumbfounded... I thought it looked good and was happy with what I saw. There was very little electroylis on the shaft and it looked like it was wearing at the point where the shaft exits the cutlass bearing. The wear is propotianal around the shaft no more then the thickness of a credit card. The wear seemed normal to me. But then again this is the first time I have repalce the cutlass. I will post some pictures up tommorrow. So my question is. Is this normal wear. Should I replace the 800$!!! shaft. Any help would be appriciated.

The thickness of a CC is a lot. I would replace it. But $800 sounds awfully high.

Thinking about this a little more. Your engine must be out of alignment for the shaft to have worn like that at the tail end of the bearing.

is that shaft labor and all ... that is not to bad if you are paying some one to do the work......if you can do the work then that is a lot of money just for a shaft......

you may want to contact General Propeller in Bradinton fl and see what you can buy the shaft for....

James, The shaft is stainless steel and the cutless bearing is rubber!! The shaft would not wear by rubbing on the bearing and if it did the bearing would be down to zero thickness where it was rubbing. You need to do some more investigating to find out where the shaft is rubbing. The other problem you will run into is that most shaft suppliers stock english size shafts and you will need a metric one which may have to be ordered special and it may explain the price you were quoted. Good luck.

25 mm = 1 inch.

I replaced our 1" x 3' shaft with a new SS two seasons ago. Paid around $250 for the shaft alone. Another $50 for a new cutless bearing, $20 for new stuffing box packing, $10 new shaft log hose + clamps. Total materials cost ~ $350.

I suppose paying $800 for all of the above installed is not a bad deal but I'm cheap so I installed it all myself.

25.4mm per inch.

As to the list of things you will need to make sure are done here are some additions.
It is likely you will need a new coupler and you will certainly need the coupler to be fit and faced so the shaft/coupler runs dead on true. In addition the prop must be lapp fit to the shaft. So you may as well have the shop fit the prop too.
By the way - there may be no reason for all new shaft because it might be possible to resurface the worn area - at less cost.
"Special order metric?" Baloney!

Considering my first shaft lasted from 1970 until 2012 , 2003 is in fact a pretty short live

I would think in a case like a 331 Beneteau it could almost be and off the shelf part as they seem to be very good about parts ?

Its still a BUNCH of labor to take it apart (my rudder has to be removed)so it again pretty tough to call without knowing whats involved in a particle model of boat :)

Ok, I pulled the shaft and they have 25mm stock in Miami. Sent the old one up to Miami to get machined and fitted to my coupler. The cutlass bearing looked good. So what im thinking is, I have ran into a few crap pots and that polypro (spelling) line must have spun on the shaft and wore it down some. I have had to stop the a few times to cut the line off the shaft so this makes sense. I was hoping the engine is not out of alignment but when the prop guys come out to install the shaft and cleaned up prop I will ensure it gets looked at. Oh yea ! much cheaper to get a custom shaft then order from Beneteau. I also added a half inch to the shaft to I can get a zinc collar on the shaft. That little prop nut zinc wasn’t cutting it! Thanks everyone!

Yes I agree ""Special order metric?" Baloney" but hey try find a shop that has shafts in metric. With all the beneteau around I though it would be much easier.

Shaft wear is highly unlikely, like someone else noted. Also I would not be overly anxious about a 25mm shaft compared to a one inch shaft.. Unless they are precision machined material I would doubt that the tolerances would be close enough to warrant a second look. 0.4 mm is a nominal 15/1000 inch.

Have you contact Beneteau and asked them if they have one in stock?

I would start with them too.

Are you going to see if you can r/r the shaft.
