Weak spot in Sealand heads?

Has anyone had a problem with Sealand heads where a 3/8" diameter black plastic rod that connects the foot lever to the water valve shears off? I almost bought a returned head at the West Marine clearance store today, when a guy told me that most of the returns on sealands he get are due to this failure. I went back & looked at the one I was going to buy, and yup, the black plastic thingy was sheared....

There was a problem with those, but

SeaLand solved it...all the new rods are steel. If it was just the toilet, and not the combination toilet/tank "Marine Traveler," you prob'ly couldn't have used itanyway... 'cuz the holding tank has to be directly below it so waste can just slide into it when the trap in the bowl is opened. If it was the Marine Traveler, and if you have room for the tank footprint in your head, SeaLand would have replaced the flush pedal mechanism under warranty.
