weak points

You are looking at a significant amount of upgrading. In particular, hull to deck fastening is a little on the light side. Also, upgrade the pintles and gudgeons on the rudder. The swing keel mecanism should be evaluated, and while it is relatively well built, needs frequent inspection (it has a tendancy to leak and rust out, esp. in salt water, at the locking strap. Really beef up the companionway doors. These are hallmark deficiencies in the c22. Get your reefing skills up to snuff. If you have the tall rig, definately use a main from a short rig, creating sort of a 7/8 rig. Outfit with a good vhf w/mast mounted antenna, and get a radar reflector. Next, read as much as you can from as many books as you can on upgraing and conducting emergency repairs at sea. It can be done, but it is definaltely not a jokeing matter. Be thorough, meticulous and cautious. And rember, the c22 was not designed for such uses. this leaves you with A LOT of work.

C22 had a tall rig?

Joe, you mentioned: Get your reefing skills up to snuff. If you have the tall rig, definately use a main from a short rig, creating sort of a 7/8 rig. I'm a little confused.. Did Catalina make a tall rigged C22?

Half the story

I should explain that the "weak points" article was a response to a question regarding the fitness of coastal sailing on a C-22. Big error on my part for first of all, heading it up as it's own article, and second, only getting it up partially. Positive attributes are listed as a response to another article. The intention was to use a big voice of caution against overestimating the 22, great little boat that it is. It's one thing to get experience starting in protected waters. Wanted to make shure that a certain degree of coastal modifications could be shared without the ol' trial and error (or worse trial by error) methods. My understanding is that there is a tall rig. If someone should, by some chance have one, and happpen to be flying a full main inbuilding coastal conditions, without down home reefing practice, well, thought the advice would have been appreciated.
