Upon replacing hose with Sealand Odorfree on my '99 H340 (thanks Peggy Hall for your tips!),had a friend who also did his 340 observe the holding tank inlet while I pumped the head free of antifreeze. It was 15 pumps on "drybowl" till first sight of pinkstuff, to traverse the length of the 8'x 1.5" diameter hose, with Jabsco head (replaced last year). Peggy often says boaters seldom pump enough (saving holding tank space?), so I estimate 20 (min) for good measure to void hose from head to tank, at least with the aforementioned system.

How to observe this ??

Joel: Thanks for the tip, it was always one of those things I wondered about. However, how do you observe the "holding tank inlet" ? My 376 (soon to be a 386 in 4 weeks !) has absolutly no way to observe when the head contents reach the holding tank. Would you let me know how you did this ? Thanks .....Jeff

You also proved something:

That a manual marine toilet WILL move waste at least 8' in the 'dry' mode. But that's a LOT of pumping, which is why, ideally, the tank should be within 6' of the toilet. Since the Bay is not "no discharge," have you thought of installing a Lectra/San so you don't have to mess with pumpouts and tank maintenance? A 34 should certainly have the power resources to support one.

How to observe holding tank

Certainly Jeff..I left the aft bulkhead wall off following replumbing till a buddy could board- he sat and held a trouble light against the (empty translucent) holding tank. The wall, held with but a few screws, conceals the holding/fuel tanks, steering post well, and a host of other cables, wires etc. Good luck with your new boat!

Thanks again Peggy

Thanks again Peggy...It is a lot of pumping...honestly haven't explored a Lectra San...are they any good? Any pros/cons to the traditional heads? Also,is your book out soon?

Lectra/San is not a head (toilet)

It's a separate device...the toilet flushes into it instead of into a holding tank...it can be used with any toilet. And yes, it's an excellent device. If you go to the Raritan website (link below) you'll find all the specs and information about how it works. My book is scheduled for release in about 3 weeks.
