my girlfriend katie and i recently got a 22 O'Day that we've been working endlessly on. it was abandoned by the levee board and sold to us at a super low price. i've done extensive carpentry on the inside, and prepared and painted the hull. we've gotten a johnson seahorse outboard and mount and are preparing to leave the dry slip it's been in for a couple weeks. we gotta be out of there by june 23rd because our budget is a bit slim and it's not cheap. anyway, the mainsail we inherited has a huge rip across the bottom and our jib is the wrong size - from another boat. we are currently in search of these sails and willing to pay - though, as i've said, our budget is slim. in fact, if anyone has any helpful tips for us, we'd be grateful - we're trying to live out a dream that we've both had since before we got together a few years ago. it all seems so close and real, but we have so much further to go. so please, if you can help us or know where we could look for these things, let us in on it. we're very nice people who play beautiful music that we want to share from port to port. the sooner the better!

Let us know what dimensions that you need and what type of fittings for the mast and boom. Also is the jib hanked on or rolling furler?

there is west wind sails in mandeville, quantum by city marina, and north sails over off esplanade.
CHeck ouy Bacon and Associates. That is a place that brokers used sails. That is a pretty common boat and you should be able to find something.
Ever thought about going to a sail maker and having the jib cut to size and having the main repaired. That may be worth it too and they might be able to do it quick.

thank you all for your prompt responses and advice. we're pretty new to this, so every bit is a great help. we haven't had the opportunity to get up and take our dimensions. the jib is hanked on with out a furler and the mainsail fittings are plastic AO23 5/16" slugs. the jib we have is 24' x 14' and specs call for 24' x 9' - but shouldn't the sail be shorter from head to clew for better visibility? we are really hoping to be shown some of that "kindness from strangers" as we know very little and have minimum resources. i'm working very hard at my job just to get the boat out of the dry slip it's in - and the rest of my time is spent working on the boat itself. the mast doesn't even have the halyards threaded thru it yet! are there any economical suggestions on how to do that - to get measurements, etc... extension ladders? one on either side? we still need lots of good advice, folks. we appreciate your being there.

The clue can be different measurements, depending on how big you want the sail and what it is for. The percentage is based on a measurement made from where the forestay meets the deck to where the deck meets the mast (referred to as J). The length of the foot of the jib is based on the J measurement and it is often 110%, 135%, or 155% of the J measurement. A jib that is longer that the J measurement is often referred to as a Genoa and the term jib is usually referring to a sail that starts out around 100% of J.

pardon our ignorance, but no one we meet seems willing to help us without trying to sell us something. so i'll ask you all: what size halyards do we use for our O'Day 22 (guage, not length)? and could you even specify what type of rope is best for this? meaning cheapest for the function - not fraying or chafing in a couple weeks...
I would think that you would want to use Stay Set X in 5/8" thickness. Length will depend on how tall your mast is and if the halyards go back to your cockpit.

Ron...you are right. I had to look it up. I had 3/8 on my Hunter 22. I was also told that was a bit overkill.
